Liberia to give two doctors trial drug

Liberia said on Tuesday it would treat two infected doctors with the scarce experimental Ebola drug ZMapp, the first Africans to receive the treatment, while authorities in Spain said a 75-year-old priest had died of the disease, Reuters reports.
The death toll from the worst ever outbreak of the highly contagious disease has climbed to 1,013 since it was discovered in remote southeastern Guinea in March, according to the World Health Organisation.  It said ZMapp doses were very scarce, raising ethical questions of who should have priority.  Spanish authorities said a 75-year-old Spanish priest who contracted Ebola in Liberia had died. The government had announced on Sunday that Miguel Pajares, the first European infected by the strain, would also be treated with ZMapp manufactured by California-based Mapp Biopharmaceutical.

Nigerian Terrorist Group, Boko Haram Funded By Latin America Drug Gang – Report

There are indications that terrorist groups, Boko Haram and Ansaru, are being funded by drug cartels in Latin America, a report has revealed.

The report entitled, “Terrorism in Northern Africa and the Sahel in 2012: Global Reach and Implications,” is an update on five earlier studies.

Published by the Director, Inter-University Centre for Terrorism Studies, USA, Yonah Alexander, in February 2013, the report suggested that Al-Qaida in Islamic Maghreb, had aligned with many other groups in order to expand its sources of funding.

Intelligence reports have in the past identified a strong link between AQIM and Boko Haram with the newly emerging Ansaru.

Where Are The Convicted Drug Dealers

The sundry abuses of our country’s criminal justice system need to be confronted by all stakeholders. Unfortunately, governments at the federal and state levels are the chief culprits because of their lackadaisical attitudes to the responsibilities of the state in the process. Matters are not helped by some officials in the criminal justice system who collude with criminals to ridicule the system. These include investigators, prosecutors and custodians of accused persons and convicts.
Recently, rights activist, Femi Falana, SAN, raised an incredulous alarm that 197 persons convicted for drug trafficking offences, are not serving their prison terms. But, as unbelievable as the report seemed, the allegation was substantiated by a committee set up by former President Olusegun Obasanjo, headed by Justice Gilbert Obayan, in 2006. According to the committee, ‘out of 143 drug convicts for the year 2006, 96 of them were never brought to prison. Similarly, another 101 drug convicts for the year 2005 were never brought to the prison, bringing the total convict evading jail to 197 within this period’.

Girl who lost 90% of skin after Taking Children's Drug wins $63 Million

A teenager who went blind and lost 90% of her skin after suffering a horrifying allergic reaction to the pain reliever Children's Motrin has won $63 million in compensation. Samantha Reckis was only 7 when she took the children's ibuprofen, manufactured by Johnson & Johnson, around Thanksgiving 2003 to ward off the symptoms of a fever.
But rather than heal her, the drug induced toxic epidermal necrolysis — a potentially fatal condition that causes the top layer of skin, the epidermis, to detach from the lower layers. The rare ailment kills 40% of those diagnosed with it — and comes from a severe allergic reaction to medications such as barbiturates, penicillins and sulphonamides.

Baba Suwe drug saga: NDLEA appeals N25 million court judgment

The Court of Appeal in Lagos is to hear arguments today on the appeal by the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency against the judgment ordering it to pay N25m as damages to Yoruba actor, Babatunde Omidina, aka Baba Suwe in 2011 for keeping him in custody beyond the legal time limit on the suspicion of drug ingestion.
The agency was also ordered to apologise to Baba Suwe publicly on “conspicuous pages of two national daily newspapers” but the NDLEA insisted in its appeal that keeping the actor in custody between October 12 and 21, 2011 on the suspicion that the drug was ingested did not violate his rights.
According to reports, the hearing has come more than one year after the NDLEA filed its notice of appeal against the judgment delivered by a Lagos High Court, Ikeja on November 24, 2011.
