Ogun Police arrest 1,227 robbery suspects, others

ABEOKUTA — The Ogun State Police Command said it had arrested  1,227  suspects for various crimes  across the state in the last six months.
The command also disclosed that of all the suspects arrested, 157 were suspected robbers while others were arrested for cultism, murder,  stealing, fraud among others.

The Federal Government today July 9th said it has arrested some politicians over evidence of their ties with the dreaded terror sect, Boko haram.

Speaking at a news briefing today at the National Information Centre Abuja, the Coordinator of the Joint Information Centre for Security, Mike Omeiri, said following the recent arrest of some members of Boko Haram in Bauchi and Borno states, some materials retrieved from them after detailed investigation had evidential links with the politicians they have arrested. He however declined to disclose the names of the politicians.

Again Senate sittings in plenary fall short by 41 days in the last legislative year, Daily Trust analysis has revealed. Section 63 of the Constitution requires both chambers of the National Assembly to sit for at least 181 days in a year.


The National Assembly operates a calendar that begins from June and sits in plenary for three days from Tuesdays to Thursdays while committees hold sessions throughout the week. The Assembly marked the third legislative year on June 6, and the legislative calendar released by the Senate indicates that senators sat for 189 in the past one year.

BRT RAMPAGE UPDATE: Army states own side of story, flays Soyinka




LAGOS— THE Army authorities, yesterday, in Lagos, said the Lance Corporal who was knocked down and killed by a BRT bus along Ikorodu Road last Friday, was not riding motorbike on the BRT lane as widely reported.

Rather, the deceased, according to the Army, was crushed to death on the normal lane plied by other motorists, maintaining also that soldiers were not responsible for the damage done to BRT buses but hoodlums who hijacked the situation.

Confab: Drama as Odili denies owning Abuja’s ‘biggest private hospital’






There was mild drama on Tuesday at the National Judicial Institute, NJI, Abuja, venue of the ongoing National Conference, when a delegate, Sidi Ali, said the biggest private hospital being built in Abuja is owned by a former Governor of Rivers State.

Delegates continued their deliberations on the report of the Committee on Devolution of Power and what took the attention of most delegates in their contribution was the issue of increasing the derivation allocation from the present 13 per cent.

Human rights lawyer, Bamidele Aturu, is dead




Lagos based human rights lawyer, Bamidele Aturu, is dead.
Mr. Aturu, known to champion human rights and constitutionalism, died on Wednesday evening after a brief illness  in a Lagos hospital.

Jonathan leaves for ECOWAS summit in Accra



Abuja -  President Goodluck Jonathan left the country on Wednesday for Accra to participate in the Summit of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government scheduled to open in the Ghanaian capital on Thursday.
This is contained in a statement issued by the Special Adviser to the President on Media and Publicity, Mr Reuben Abati.
The statement said that Jonathan and other Heads of State and Government attending the summit would consider and adopt the 2014 Interim Report of the President of the ECOWAS Commission, Mr Kadre Ouedraogo.

Inspector General of police Abubakar Accused of Massive Fraud



A human rights group named Paths of Peace has accused Nigeria’s Inspector General of Police, Mohammed D. Abubakar, of defrauding police officers of billions of naira in a dubious investment scam.

In a petition to the Senate, the group demanded that IGP Abubakar be probed over the alleged multi-billion-naira scheme that affects every policeman in the country.  Paths of Peace, a non-governmental organization that wrote the petition, stated that its objective was to fight for the rights of the oppressed.

Kiev punitive operation in eastern Ukraine threatens loss of national sovereignty - State Duma head



The chairman of Russia's State Duma, Sergei Naryshkin, argues that Ukrainian government's military operation in eastern Ukraine threatens to deprive the country of its sovereignty.

"The plans to sell off to American and European owners something that has in the past brought economic benefit and welfare to the Ukrainian people have ceased to be a complete secret. Nor are the Kiev authorities trying to hide it any more. However, is this not what explains both the rapid pace and the brutality of the hostilities in the east of the country?" Naryshkin says in an article entitled "Europe Looking for Adventures" and published in Russian government daily Rossiyskaya Gazeta.

Fighting between Ukrainian army, self-defense forces under way near Lugansk airport



Clashes between Ukrainian government forces and militia are taking place on Wednesday evening near the Lugansk airport controlled by the Ukrainian army.

Eyewitnesses told Interfax they saw Grad rocket launchers being used twice but could not say by which side.
Eyewitnesses also said that a gas pipeline near the airport has been damaged and the airport's engineering premises were burning.

Ukraine's combat operations in southeast damage 62 gas pipelines leaving locals without gas.



Continuing combat operations between the Ukrainian military and self-defense militia in east Ukraine’s Lugansk region have damaged the local gas pipeline network and left almost 10,000 families without household gas, the press office of the gas company Luganskgaz said on Wednesday.

According to the company’s data, "the hostilities have damaged 62 gas distribution pipelines, 2 gas distribution points and 24 courtyard pipeline stretches."
As a result, "1,188 apartments and 8,641 homes have been left without gas supply," the press office said, TASS reports.

Govt. didn’t interfere unduly in NFA, says Sports Minister -





Abuja -  The Minister of Sports, Tammy Danagogo, on Wednesday in Abuja said government did not unduly interfere in the affairs of the Nigeria Football Association (NFA) as being claimed by FIFA.
Speaking with State House correspondents at the Presidential Villa, Danagogo said Nigeria was not at risk with the world football body over the crisis in the NFA.

The minister’s assurance however came shortly before FIFA announced the country’s ban over Saturday’s dissolution of the Aminu Maigari-led NFA board.

Balmo forest: FG probes politicians sponsoring terrorists





The Coordinator, National Information Centre, Mr. Mike Omeri, has said the Federal Government has started investigating some unnamed politicians with alleged link to terror activities in the country.

Omeri, who spoke in Abuja on Wednesday, added that this followed the successful raid of the Balmo Forest in Bauchi and Borno states, where some foreign mercenaries were also apprehended by the operatives of the Nigerian Army.

Police parade suspected baby factory operators in Rivers



The Rivers State Police Command on Tuesday paraded three pregnant women and a 36-year-old man suspected to be involved in producing babies for sale.
The ‘baby factory’ suspects, who were arrested at Igwuruta in Ikwerre Local Government Area, on July 5, 2014, were identified as Odinchinma Nwala (25), Glory Anyanwu (22), Goodness Nwankwo (19), and Stanley Okechukwu (male, 36).

FIFA hammers Nigeria, suspends NFF indefinitely



The Fifa Emergency Committee has announced that it has suspended the Nigerian Football Association with immediate effect due to alleged “government interference.”

“The decision follows a letter sent by FIFA to the NFF on 4 July 2014, in which it expressed its great concern after the NFF was served with court proceedings and consequently an order preventing the president of the NFF, the NFF Executive Committee members and the NFF Congress from running the affairs of Nigerian football was granted by a High Court of the Federal Republic of Nigeria,” a statement read.

"Boko Haram menace is not a war the army can easily win" - Alao-Akala




Former Oyo state governor Adebayo Alao-Akala in   an interview with Vanguard says the army with all its sophistication can't easily win the battle against Boko Haram. He explained this while giving an answer to questions about their state of insecurity in Nigeria and what should be done  to arrest the threatening situation
"With due respect to the army, no matter how sophisticated the army is, this is not a war they can easily win. It is one that everybody has to participate in order for the nation to win. What they should do is to make sure the police are well equipped to face the challenge. If you see when they started they first of all scared away the police. They are attacking police station all over the place just to scare them. And they allowed police to be scared by bringing in army, no!

Hungry Robbers kill one, steal bags of rice in Ibadan

IBADAN — Armed robbers, numbering about 25, invaded a market at the new Iyana Agbala community in Egbeda Local Government Area of Oyo State, yesterday, killing a night guard and stealing goods worth millions of naira.
According to information gathered, the dare-devil robbers strangled the guard who reportedly identified some of them.

Unidentified Gunmen Shoot UNILAG Student in the Head



student of UNILAG  was reportedly shot in the heard yesterday by unidentified gunmen at the King Jaja Hall section of the university on Monday. Fortunately, the student who had been identified as Sapara, the final year student of Philosophy, had his face covered in blood instead of being dead after the bullet scraped the medial side of his head. 

He was subsequently taken up to the Lagos University Teaching Hospital, Idi-Araba, and official report revealed  he is in a well balanced condition. The incident had however generated chaos as students were seen running in various directions after the gunshot was fired.

If price of oil crashes today, govs flying jets will look for okada to ride – Delegate -

ABUJA- A delegate representing the South West Geo- Political Zone of the country, Yinka Odunmakin told other delegates yesterday that if the price of oil crashes today, governors who he alleged to be going round the world with private jets, will look for motorcycles, known as Okada to ride.
Contributing to debate on report of the devolution of power Committee yesterday, Odunmakin also said that if no oil, only Lagos state out of the 36 states of the country would be able to use its Internally Generated Revenue, IGR to pay workers’ salaries.

50 first class traditional rulers, leaders, stakeholders, elders from Osun State have written the Chairman, National Conference, Justice Idris Kutigi and the leadership to demand the inclusion of Oduduwa State as an additional state to those to be created from the South West geo- political zone of the country.
Expressing dismay that Oduduwa State was not part of the 18 states proposed by the national conference committee on Political Restructuring and Forms of Government, the Osun traditional rulers and leaders said the demand for the new state had been a passion for the people of the affected area since 1983.

Two ex-heads of state, emirs plead for Nyako



Two former military heads of state led the embattled Adamawa State Governor Murtala Nyako to a meeting with President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday night in Abuja as part of the efforts to save Nyako, who is battling to escape impeachment by legislators in his state.
The PUNCH learnt that the meeting was at the instance of the two ex-heads of state.
A source close to the meeting confided in one of our correspondents that the two former dictators’ intervention rested on the fact that Nyako was a mutual friend.
Nyako is a retired Vice-Admiral and one-time Chief of Naval Staff under ex-dictator Ibrahim Babangida.

Al-Qaeda threat: Security beefed up at Lagos airport



Security activities was on the high side on Tuesday as the entire Murtala Mohammed Airport, Lagos, was put under intense screening and searchlight for several hours, as security agencies screened all vehicles and humans entering the cargo hajj camp of the complex.
The situation forced scores of passengers, especially those going on the international flights, to trek to the airport in order not to miss their scheduled flights.

Chibok girls’ll be rescued soon –GEJ, OBJ, others



The Council of State, made up of former heads of government, on Tuesday held its second meeting in the year and came out with a promise that the abducted pupils of Government Secondary School, Chibok, Borno State, would soon be rescued.
More than 200 girls were seized from the school on the night of April 14 by members of the terrorist Islamic sect, Boko Haram. The incident has attracted global condemnation and protests. Almost 90 days in the custody of the terrorists, there have been many not-too-pleasant stories about the welfare of the girls.

Keshi demands ₦10m-a-month contract –Report



Stephen Keshi has reportedly demanded a significant salary hike to sign a new contract to remain as Nigeria coach.
According to africanfootball.com on Tuesday, Keshi, who announced last week that his contract with the Nigeria Football Federation had expired after the Super Eagles crashed out of the World Cup following their 2-0 defeat by France, told President Goodluck Jonathan that he will sign a new deal if the NFF agrees to pay him N10m a month. The former Nigeria captain received N5m a month in his initial contract.

3) Hakeem Kae-Kazim
Having started acting as far back as the 1980s, Hakeem Kae-Kazim is a British Nigerian  actor that many Nigerians are so proud of. Born in October 1962, Hakeem is best known for his role as Georges Rutaganda in the 2004 motion picture Hotel Rwanda.
His achievements cannot be overrated and to name a few, the movies he had featured in include Coming To America, King Solomon’s Mines, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, The Fourth Kind, X-Men Origins: Wolverine and Last Flight to Abuja, among others.
