On This Day: Every January 26 is celebrated as Australia Day (previously known as Anniversary Day, Foundation Day, and ANA Day). The date commemorates the arrival of the British First Fleet at Sydney Cove in 1788 and the proclamation at that time of British sovereignty over the eastern seaboard of New Holland (part of present-day Australia). For Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people, today is known as Invasion Day or Survival Day. It is a day filled with great pain for many Aboriginal people, and calls continue for Australia to stop recognizing the day British colonists landed and illegally claimed Australia as their own.

Asylum should be Femi Fani-Kayode permanent home
CHIEF David Oluwafemi Adewunmi Abdulateef Fani-Kayode (Femi Fani-Kayode, for short), former Special Assistant (Public Affairs) to former President Olusegun Obasanjo; former Minister of Culture and Tourism, and former Minister of Aviation, is truly a remarkable fellow. Whenever he speaks or writes, he poses an intellectual challenge as to where to draw the line between normality and abnormality. The instances are numerous, but his last outing: “The gutless eunuch and the lion king”, published in The Nation of Friday, January 17, 2014, raised critical issues which the psychiatric community must tackle in the interest of the nation.

Nigeria bleeds as $1.7bn goes out weekly.
A total of $88.4 billion left the shores of Nigeria to foreign lands through official channels in 2013 of which $18.3 billion was remmitted in three months thus giving an average foreign exchange outflow of $1.7 billion weekly.
This is just as the Excess Crude Account (ECA) component of foreign reserves has now fallen to just $2.5 billion, compared to $11.5 billion a year ago. The $18.3 billion went out of the country in the form of capital flight, which Nigerians indulged in.
According to figures captured by the International Remmittance unit of CBN, the amount was remitted through banks, Bureau De Change, Travel agencies and debt payment to foreign creditors to which Nigeria owes some money.

Hitler escaped and died in South America in 1984 aged 95
He is believed to have died after shooting himself in a Berlin bunker in 1945 when he realised Germany had lost World War II. But a startling new book claims Adolf Hitler actually escaped his hideout and died incognito in 1984 in a small town near Brazil's border with Bolivia - and it can be proved by a picture.
Not only that, but the author believes the Fuhrer fled to Argentina and then Paraguay before settling in the Brazilian state of Mato Grosso to hunt for buried treasure - with a map given to him by Vatican allies, according to its author.

No escape from Israeli drones in Gaza
There
have been no Israeli troops in Gaza since 2005 - they are all in the
so-called buffer zone along the border. Yet, ubiquitous drones make it
look like the Israeli occupation of the enclave continues.
Al
Mezan, a local human rights watchdog, has been recording Israeli
drone strikes from as long as they first happened in Gaza.
