Osun State senior secondary school students get computer tablets
Osun State government last week commenced the distribution of the Computer Tablets of Learning (Opon Imo) to the students of government-owned secondary schools in the state. The distribution of the tablets started at the Ataoja School of Science, Osogbo on Monday with 385 students in the Senior Secondary School 2 (SSS2), each receiving the technological device.The project, an initiative of Governor Rauf Aregbesola, specially designed for the students of public secondary schools in the state to improve their performance in internal and external examinations.

Kwankwaso Releases Names Of 25 Victims Of Suicide Bombings, Says Senators Discussing Nonsense In Abuja ( See The List)
Kano State Governor, Engr. Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, yesterday released the names of some of the victims of last Tuesday’s suicide bombing attack on a luxury bus terminal in Kano. Apparently to refute that most of the victims were from South Eastern part of Nigeria.
The governor was speaking to a visiting federal government representatives who had come to commiserate with the state government regarding the deadly Monday suicide bombing of a bus station that killed at least 25 people.
Kwankwaso had earlier replied Senators Kabiru Gaiya and Uche Chukwumerije, saying they were “just ranting nonsense” in Abuja, and that they lacked first hand knowledge of the attacks.
Below is the list he read out to the visitors:

The explosive which targeted the JTF checkpoint was remote controlled.

Olubunmi Oke, a female journalist working with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA), Akure, has been released by her abductors.
Mrs. Oke , a nursing mother, was kidnapped on Thursday by four gunmen after closing from work at Oba Ile area of Akure, the Ondo State capital. She was said to have been whisked away shortly after she drove into her residence after closing from work.
Although, the abductors demanded ransom, it could not be ascertained at this time when any money was paid before the journalist was released

Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Dr Ade Abolurin has charged officers and men of the corps to shun corruption, disclosing how he recently turned down an offer of over N10 million from a group which wanted to supply laptops to the corps.
Dr Abolurin who spoke yesterday at the National Cooperative Summit of the Corps in Abuja also disclosed how a team of private developers attempted to induce him financially to have him approve their proposal for a mass housing scheme for the NSCDC.
“Some people came and met me and said they wanted to supply us laptops and I said if the laptops would be highly affordable, then I will not have any problem with their proposal.
‘South East govoment to give Achebe befitting burial’ – Orji
Governor Theodore Orji of Abia State has expressed shock at the death of Professor Chinua Achebe, a literary Icon who just passed away. And Orji captured the shock of his death in the deceased literary words: “Things have fallen apart, the centre cannot hold, we are no longer at ease.”
The governor, however, said the governors of the South-East would do their best to give the departed a befitting burial. Ugochukwu Emezue, Chief Press Secretary to Orji, said that Ndigbo has lost a literary icon, a legend of all times and a hero whose novels remain a reference point in and outside the country.
The governor who lamented the exit of Prof Achebe maintained that he was yet to come to terms with the sudden demise of this statesman of international repute. He declared that the late Prof Achebe impacted positively on the lives of people through his literary works.
Achebe, the Abia governor stated, would be remembered for always standing up for Ndigbo at all times, despite all odds.
“Though Professor Achebe was challenged through an accident that affected his normal movement , he waxed stronger, impacting knowledge to the younger ones as a lecturer abroad” , the governor added.

Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqayyatu Ahmed Rufa’i, yesterday described, the University of Abuja as “a shame’ to the nation, and blamed the university’s governing council for the crisis.
She said the report of “a high-powered 40-man visitation panel” that conducted an investigation into the activities of the school exposed rot that “is deeper than what we are seeing now.”
She added that the report had been concluded and a White Paper drawn and submitted to President Goodluck Jonathan for approval.
“University of Abuja is supposed to be a pride to all of us, but, unfortunately, it is a shame! The university, since inception, there has been so much problem,” she said.
“There are two scenarios to the problem we are facing in the University of Abuja. One is the issue of programmes operated illegally for many years in the Faculty of Medicine, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, Faculty of Agriculture and that of Engineering.”

Nigeria novelist Achebe dies in Boston
Nigerian novelist Chinua Achebe, widely seen as the grandfather of modern African literature, has died at the age of 82.
The statesman, dissident and author of the novel "Things Fall Apart" died on Friday following a brief illness, said Andrew Wylie, Achebe's agent
Achebe's death in Boston was confirmed by Brown University, where he taught.
Literary critics have compared Achebe's eminence worldwide to Gabriel Garcia Marquez, Toni Morrison and a handful of other writers.
Jacob Zuma, president of South Africa, described Achebe as a "colossus of African writing", expressing sadness at his death.
Nelson Mandela, former president of South Africa and an icon of the Apartheid era, has called him a writer "in whose company the prison walls fell down".

Torrents of tributes pour for Chinua Achebe
President Goodluck Jonathan said on Friday that late Prof. Chinua Achebe will be greatly missed for his immense patriotism and sincere commitment to a better Nigeria.
“President Jonathan received with immense sadness, news of the passing away of Nigeria’s globally acclaimed `writer, scholar, tutor, cultural icon, nationalist and artist of the very first rank’’, said Reuben Abati, the special Adviser to the president on Media and Publicity.
“The president believes that Prof. Achebe’s frank, truthful and fearless interventions in national affairs will be greatly missed at home in Nigeria While others may have disagreed with his views, most Nigerians never doubted his immense patriotism and sincere commitment to the building of a greater, more united and prosperous nation that all Africans and the entire black race could be proud of.Jonathan’s tribute was among the torrents of tributes that poured forth globally for the literary icon, who died early Friday in the US at the age of 82.
NTA Agrees Royalties Deal With COSON
The Acting Director General of Nigerian Television Authority, NTA, Mallam Musa B. Mayaki has said that NTA will pay exactly what it owes Copyright Society of Nigeria, COSON and fully support its (COSON) activities.
He made the statement in a meeting with the leadership of COSON on Tuesday, March 19 at the Boardroom of NTA. He said that the two organisations need to converge for the betterment of the Nigerian society.
Chief Okoroji who described the occasion as a goodwill visit also said that despite the lingering issue, the payment of music royalties to Nigerian musicians is important if the industry is to survive.

Navy Uses N45, 000 Bait To Arrest Employment Syndicate Members
Three members of an employment syndicate have been arrested by the Nigerian Navy in Abuja.
The Commandant of the Nigerian Navy Unit at the Mogadishu Cantonment, Commodore Segun Adebari who paraded the suspect said they fell for a bait of N45, 000 which they wanted to personally collect.
This is coming at the heels of many cases of job scam into military and paramilitary organisations in Nigeria.

Novelist, poet, professor, critic and the author of the most widely read book in African literature (Things Fall Apart) professor Chinua Achebe, has passed on. Professor Achebe died last night March 21 in a hospital in Boston, Massachusetts. He had been ill for a while. He was 82 years old.
