Wikipedia Drags NSA to court Over Mass Surveillance

As Wikipedia formulates it lawsuit against the National Security Agency, prepare to witness a clash between one of the world’s most democratic information collectors and one of the world’s most tyrannical.

On Tuesday, the non-profit Wikimedia Foundation will file a lawsuit against the NSA and the US Department of Justice. The suit argues that the agency’s Upstream collection program violates not one, but two constitutional amendments.

Huge volumes of private emails, phone calls, and internet chats are being intercepted by the National Security Agency with the secret cooperation of more foreign governments than previously known, according to newly disclosed documents from whistleblower Edward Snowden.

Using the codename RAMPART-A, the NSA would work with these third-party countries to attempt to intercept as much of the world’s online communications as possible, says the Danish privacy news website Dagbladet Information.

President Barack Obama on Friday will announce the end of a telephone metadata collection program that has come under harsh criticism, a senior US official said.

"In his speech, the President will say that he is ordering a transition that will end the Section 215 telephone metadata program as it currently exists," the official said, as Obama prepares to unveil long awaited reforms of NSA surveillance techniques.

The National Security Adviser, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd.), on Wednesday  met behind closed-doors with President Goodluck Jonathan at the Presidential Villa, Abuja.

Dasuki is a member of the three-man administrative panel set up by Jonathan to probe the Minister of Aviation, Ms Stella Oduah, over the N255m bulletproof cars purchased for her by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority.

New details about deceptive activity of US’ National Security Agency came to the fore on Sunday. Agency used specific hack attacks dubbed “man in the middle” (MITM), allowing to redirect users to a copycat site which relays all the data entered to NSA data banks.

A disrobing report was released by Brazilian TV network Globo News last weekend. It is based on classified information, revealed by former CIA employee Edward Snowden.

The US National Security Agency (NSA) snoops on people by accessing user data from smart phones manufactured by all companies, new documents reveal. American spies can tap into iOS, Android, and even BlackBerry systems.

The US spying agency can get access to such data as contact lists, SMS traffic, notes and location information about where a user has been, said the documents obtained by Der Spiegel.

US National Security Agency spied on the communications of the Brazilian and Mexican presidents, accessing the Mexico leader's emails even before he was elected, Brazil's Globo television reported.

Glenn Greenwald, a Rio de Janeiro-based columnist for the Guardian newspaper who obtained secret files from NSA leaker Edward Snowden, told Globo on Sunday that a document dated June 2012 shows that Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto's emails were being accessed already a month before his election.

Google engineer blasts US mass surveillance program after receiving NSA award

Dr. Joseph Bonneau, an engineer for Google, was announced the winner of the National Security Agency's first annual "Science of Security Competition" on July 19 for his paper "The Science of Guessing," which analyzed over 70 million user passwords. Dr. Bonneau shared his "conflicted feelings" over receiving the award and chastised NSA surveillance.

On the same day when Dr. Bonneau was named the winner of the Science of Security (SoS) Competition he wrote a blog post about his "conflicted feelings" around the US surveillance program.

The National Security Adviser, Mr. Mohammed Sambo Dasuki, has said that terrorism and other security challenges in the country have forced the military to embark on joint operation with other para-military outfits in 28 states.

He pleaded with Nigerians to accept military presence in the society which is becoming a routine pattern.  He, however, admitted that military intervention in internal security is affecting its professionalism.  He said terrorism has raised the flag of security demands to levels higher than the nation had witnessed since the civil war

Dasuki, who opened up at a session on National Civil-Military Dialogue in Ajuji Hotel, Abuja, urged Nigerians to assist the military to provide information which could assist in the fight against insurgents, terrorists and all other forms of criminality

Snowden’s revelations just tip of NSA spy scandal iceberg

Like Julian Assange, Edward Snowden is a media-trumpeted whistleblower hero. Like Assange, Snowden has striking, TV-star good looks. Like Assange, Snowden is involved in a dramatic TV-style chase across countries and continents.

It's almost like Assange and Snowden are starring in their own reality-TV shows. 

With all the hoopla about Snowden (and before him, Assange), it's easy to forget all of the other whistleblowers who have revealed even more explosive information. 

Consider two other NSA whistleblowers: Russ Tice and James Bamford. 

Russ Tice is a former NSA intelligence analyst who has also worked for the US Air Force, the Office of Naval Intelligence, and the Defense Intelligence Agency. He was a real US intelligence insider, many pay grades above rookie contractor Edward Snowden.

As Snowden landed in Moscow after leaving Hong Kong, where the US had requested his arrest, leading Democratic senator Chuck Schumer accused the Russian president of sticking a finger in the eye of the US, The Guardian reports.

"The bottom line is very simple: allies are supposed to treat each other in decent ways and Putin always seems almost eager to put a finger in the eye of the United States, whether it is Syria, Iran and now of course with Snowden," Schumer said on CNN's State of the Union.

Britain urges airlines not to allow NSA leaker Edward Snowden ( True Hero) to board flights to UK

The UK government has issued a statement, urging airlines around the world not to allow US whistleblower Edward Snowden to board flights to Great Britain.

The document, released Monday, said carriers should deny Snowden boarding because he is most likely to be refused entry to the UK.  Any airline that allows the American ex-spy on board of its plane flying into Britain, will be fined 2,000 British pounds. Edward Snowden provided detailed information about a wide-reaching National Security Agency Internet surveillance program to journalists and then revealed his own identity voluntarily.

Until three weeks ago, Snowden worked at an NSA office in Hawaii. On May 20 he left Hawaii for Hong Kong where, according to him, “he would be in a place that might be able to resist US prosecution attempts”.
