Henry McKean, Ireland, has just returned from Amsterdam, the Netherlands, where last week he ‘gave birth’ to Baby David after a labour that lasted over two hours.

He says the machine was invented by the Russians, possibly so they could “basically electrocute their weightlifters to help them feel and withstand pain”. “Then the Americans took it over and used it in physio to help athletes recover from injury,” says McKean.

McKean, who works for Newstalk as Sean Moncrieff’s roaming reporter, says the road to Amsterdam was a long one. Having come across a clip of “the Dutch equivalent of Ant and Dec” giving birth last year, McKean’s producer suggested he might make a perfect candidate. Reluctantly, he accepted.

Court Grants N250Million Bail To Alleged Cop Killer Of Subsidy Protester

A Lagos High Court has granted bail to a Divisional Police Officer, Segun Fabunmi, who was dismissed over the shooting of Adedamola Daramola, during the January 2012 fuel subsidy protests in Lagos.

The trial judge admitted bail to Mr. Fabunmi in the sum of N250 million with two sureties who each must have landed property in Lagos worth N100 million.  Although the law says that bail should not be granted in capital offences, such as murder, bail is still at the discretion of the Judge, so the presiding Judge, Justice Olabisi Akinlade, granted the dismissed police officer bail based on his health and his performance when he was in the police force.

Delivering her judgement, Justice Akinlade stated that the defendant was granted bail on the grounds that he has renal failure and would need special medical attention which the prison service cannot afford.  She acknowledged that the medical report issued by the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital on his state of health was sufficient proof.

Shocker - Nigerian Police Retrieve 20 human skulls at a dumpsite in Aba ( Photo)

A dumpsite has been discovered near Aba, Abia State, where over 20 human skulls and decomposing bodies, including those of school children were found. The site, which was a horror to behold was located, at about kilometre 15 on the Aba/Azumini Highway at an area called “No man’s land” after Akpaa village in Obingwa Local Government of the state. The discovery followed the arrest of four policemen attached to the Federal Highway Patrol unit of the Nigeria Police, Aba Section, who allegedly killed a 26-year-old man in Aba. The policemen led by their officer-in-charge, Hyginus Omeze, who were ordered to be detained by the Area Commander for Aba, Rabiu Dayi were alleged to have murdered one Onyekachi Chukwu, 26 and dumped his body at the site.

 Daily Sun gathered that on Sunday June 23 Onyekachi, who hailed from Ahaba Imenyi in Isuikwuato Local Government and lived at No. 47 Ukaegbu Road, went out with his friends to drink in a hotel located on Ekenna Avenue. After spending the day, Onyekachi was said to have decided to pass the night in the house of one of his friends residing also in Ogbor hill. According to a source, as he made to knock at the gate, the policemen came from nowhere and after beating him, got him arrested.

The National Security Adviser, Mr. Mohammed Sambo Dasuki, has said that terrorism and other security challenges in the country have forced the military to embark on joint operation with other para-military outfits in 28 states.

He pleaded with Nigerians to accept military presence in the society which is becoming a routine pattern.  He, however, admitted that military intervention in internal security is affecting its professionalism.  He said terrorism has raised the flag of security demands to levels higher than the nation had witnessed since the civil war

Dasuki, who opened up at a session on National Civil-Military Dialogue in Ajuji Hotel, Abuja, urged Nigerians to assist the military to provide information which could assist in the fight against insurgents, terrorists and all other forms of criminality

Army officer accused of beating, crippling NYSC member

Miss Mercy Okpithe joined the Dance Troupe on the Orientation Camp of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Anambra State in November 2012. But four months later she was severely beaten up by the Camp Commandant.

Captain S.O. Beke attacked her about 11:00p.m on Monday, March 18, this year. She allegedly fainted and was rushed to the camp clinic. The following day, she was transferred to the Anambra State University Teaching Hospital, Awka. At the hospital, she was diagnosed with dislocation of coccyx, a small triangular bone at the base of the spinal column.

The hospital further referred her to the National Orthopaedic Hospital, Igbobi, Lagos, for special attention. It was gathered that she might be flown abroad for surgery.

A new Foreign Direct Investment (FDI) report released by the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) yesterday has put Nigeria’s FDI inflows ahead of other African countries.

The UNCTAD World Investment Report 2013 subtitled: “Global Value Chains: Investment and Trade for Development,” disclosed that Nigeria retained its position as Africa’s number one destination for FDIs for the second time in two years with FDI inflows of $7.03 billion in 2012. This, it observed, was in spite of the fact that FDI inflows into the country actually fell from $8.9 billion in 2011 to $7 billion last year.

DPO Arrested For Almost Beating Sergeant To Death in Ikeja

The Divisional Police Officer in charge of the Manufacturing Association of Nigeria, MAN, Centre Police Station, has been summoned by Lagos State Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko for brutally beating one of his sergeants.  According to reports, the Police Officer, Jimoh Aliu wanted to displine the sergeant John Ismaila for coming late to work.

Without waiting for an explanation, Aliu allegedly pounced on Ismaila and begin to physically attack him. The DPO was said to have beaten the sergeant until he started bleeding from his ears. He then ordered that the sergeant be locked up in the cell.  The sergeant was continually assaulted until he started bleeding from his ears, then passed out in the pool of his own blood. He was then rushed to Ikeja General Hospital.

When asked about the incident, the DPO refused to apologize to the Sergeant, insisting that he was just trying to “discipline the erring sergeant” adding that the man will still “face an orderly room trial.”

A officer attached to Harry Akande, owner of AIC Limited on Tuesday threatened to ‘gun down'the official of the Federal Airport Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

AIC on Tuesday stormed the airport premises to reclaim the land that has been removed from the company but was resisted by FAAN‘s Aviation Security officials, who threw caution to the wind and battled members of the AIC, including throwing stones at Mr Akande.

FAAN had leased the said land to AIC about 10 years back for the development of a hotel facility at the international wing of the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

A forthnight ago, FAAN had won a case against AIC on the land because the Federal High Court in Lagos put aside your decision of arbitration that awarded the company $48 million to be paid by FAAN, as compensation for ejection of AIC from the land.

ATM Fraud: Fake Naira Notes Being Put Inside ATM Machines

The House of Representatives has directed its Committee on Banking and Currency to investigate an alleged dispensing of fake naira notes by some Automated Teller Machines, ATMs, in some elements of the country.

Moving the motion under matters of urgent national importance, Hon. Yusuf Ayo Tajudeen, noted that in 2001 the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN, introduced ATMs as a platform for transacting business by customers and used as payment modules in carrying out other businesses such as for instance money transfer, payment of utilities and similar transactions which had impacted positively on banking operations, service delivery and safety of customers fund.

Computer mouse creator dead at 88

The inventor of the computer mouse and the graphical user interface, Douglas Engelbart, has passed away at his home in Atherton, California. He unveiled the prototype of the now standard computer mouse in a December 1968 demonstration in San Francisco and also initiated the first ever video conference with a colleague some 50 kilometres away at the same event.

 Mr. Englebart also laid the basis for the internet by describing how information could be tied using text-based laws. His employer, SRI, licensed his mouse design for 40,000 dollars and later released the first commercial mouse with Apple's Lisa computer in 1983.

Egypt prosecutor issues arrest warrant for top Muslim Brotherhood Leader

The Egyptian prosecutor's office has ordered the arrest of the Muslim Brotherhood's top leader, Mohamed Badie, and his deputy, Khairat el-Shater, judicial and army sources have said.

Shater, a wealthy businessman seen as the Brotherhood's top political strategist, was the group's first choice candidate to run in last year's presidential election. But he was disqualified from the race due to past convictions, forcing Morsi to take his place.<

Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi, has named a block and a N4.3bn football college after Super Eagles skipper and Fenerbahce defence strongman, Joseph Yobo.  Amaechi named the street resulting in Adokiye Amiesimaka Stadium in Ikwerre Local Government Area of their state after Yobo as a mark of respect to him for leading the national team to victory at the 2013 Africa Cup of Nations.

The governor spoke during a state banquet in honour of the Super Eagles'star at Government House in Port Harcourt on Saturday.  He explained, “We are very proud of you (Yobo) as you played well and have inked well for the united states; I congratulate you and your spouse and I wish you all of the best.

Abuja Residents groan under new transport scheme

A new transport scheme in Abuja has fetched road users and commuters more pains than gains.

 

 Although the new scheme for public transport services was introduced by the Federal Capital Territory Administration to cater for the daily influx of people into Abuja, it may not have achieved the desired goals as expected.

 

The scheme was designed to improve transportation in the city so as to enable commuters to get to their destinations safely and in good time. Also, it was meant to boost transportation on feeder roads and to check traffic jams on high capacity bus routes.

President Goodluck Jonathan to visit China next week

Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan will visit China next week in a trip aimed at signing infrastructure deals and boosting trade between the Asian power and Africa’s biggest oil producer, officials said Wednesday.  Nigeria, Africa’s most populous nation, has borrowed money from China to finance infrastructure projects, and Beijing has shown increasing interest in Nigeria’s oil industry.

Jonathan is expected in China from July 9-12.

“We want to build trade and economic relationships and we want to have a good exchange of knowledge,” Finance Minister Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala told reporters.

She said that the visit aims to “increase trade, get them to increase investment in Nigeria and get a strategic long-term relationship”.

“We want to up our trade volume with China of non-oil goods. This is our objective because we want to diversify our economy,” she said. Oil accounts for some 80 percent of government revenue in Nigeria.

Trade and Investment Minister Olusegun Aganga put trade volume between the two countries at $13 billion dollars (10 billion euros) in 2012, up from about $2 billion in 2005. Deals involving loans amounting to some $1.3 billion for areas including electricity and airport construction are expected to be signed during the visit.

U.S. Senator Patrick Leahy, chairman of the Senate subcommittee that oversees foreign aid, said on Wednesday that his panel would review the $1.5 billion in annual assistance the country sends to Egypt in the wake of the ouster of Egyptian President Mohamed Morsi.

"Egypt's military leaders say they have no intent or desire to govern, and I hope they make good on their promise," Leahy said in a statement. "In the meantime, our law is clear: U.S. aid is cut off when a democratically elected government is deposed by military coup or decree."
