'The national anthem is very bland and uninspiring' - See Etcetera's Article.

Etcetera now doesn't think our national anthem is inspiring enough. Find his views below...

After hearing of the proposal of some delegates at the ongoing confab that we should revert to the old national anthem, I sat by my piano and played both anthems. Playing and singing to the current anthem “Arise O’ Compatriot” was basically easy because I had done that countless times and I wasn’t even looking at the piano keys as I sang through the verses.

I downloaded the lyrics of the old anthem just to be sure I was singing the right words. I know the tune by heart because my dad frequently sang it to me when I was a little school boy. And I felt nothing as usual singing it. But right from the first line of the old anthem “Nigeria We Hail Thee,” I felt a strange sense of pride and patriotism. I felt very strange because like every Nigerian, I am saddened that as a country, we have lost our way.

Lessons from Edo teacher’s literacy drama

GOVERNOR Adams Oshiomhole of Edo State and his primary school teachers recently offered the country a classic evidence of the collapse of the foundation of education in an astounding literacy drama. A female primary school teacher for 20 years was unable to read her age declaration affidavit. Even when the governor prodded her by reading the text and asked her to repeat after him, she stuttered. The drama lasted for about five minutes. This is most shameful. It is a serious indictment of the training, recruitment, and supervision of teachers in our primary education system.

Reps ask CBN to stop trading in naira

The House of Representatives on Thursday blamed the growing trading in new naira notes on members of staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
In a resolution in Abuja, the House alleged that there was a cartel made up of bank workers, who exchange the new naira notes for gratifications and later resell them to members of the public.

The lawmakers accused the cartel of ensuring that new notes were not in circulation, a factor that explained the mutilated notes in the economy.
The House directed the CBN to stop the “bribe for new naira notes” by investigating the cartel and punishing the members of staff involved.
