Any party that fields Jonathan’ll lose —APC **Opposition confused, desperate power mongers, says PDP

While the APC believes that  fielding  Jonathan as a candidate would be suicidal for any party, the Presidency and the PDP argued  that he remains the best to contest and win a presidential poll in the country at present.
The latest war of attrition  was spurred by   Tuesday’s invitation  to the President by the APC Interim National Chairman, Chief Bisi Akande, to join the newly formed political party if he was fed up with the crises  in  the PDP.
Akande  had said,  “We (the APC) don’t even close our door to the PDP. If Jonathan is tired of the crises in the PDP, he is welcome in the APC.”
The Presidency however reacted immediately  to the  invitation, saying   it was  an acknowledgment by the APC  of Jonathan’s sterling leadership qualities.

Shell shuts 624MW Afam VI Power Plant

Power generation in the country dropped further on Tuesday following the shutdown of the 624 megawatts capacity Afam VI Power Plant by the Shell Petroleum Development Company Joint Venture. Shell said in a statement that the power plant was shut down due to gas shortage arising from the closure of the Trans Niger Pipeline due to crude oil theft related leaks. The pipeline was shut in June following a fire incident. It was reopened after six days only for SPDC to on July 11 shut the pipeline again due to a leak.

The shutdown of the TNP system, comprising the 28-inch and 24-inch streams, resulted in the deferment of 150,000 barrels of oil per day and huge economic losses to the Federal Government. The Corporate Media Relations Manager, SPDC, Mr. Tony Okonedo, said the shutdown had also led to tank tops and non-evacuation of condensate from the Okoloma Gas Plant, which supplies Afam VI Power Plant with feed gas.

Obama in Africa: is US hard power a match for China's 'soft power'? (Question Of The Day)

The U.S. President Barack Obama has wound up his week-long tour of three African countries. On Monday, he pledged a new U.S. economic partnership with Africa. Still, many observers doubt that the visit dubbed as coming "too late" and yielding "too little" will become a major factor in America's scramble with China for influence on what has been ragearded in the West as "forgotten continent" for too long.

On his final stop in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, Barack Obama focused on Africa's need for energy. Reuters reports that Washington plans a $7 billion initiative to help tackle Africa's crippling lack of electrical power.
Besides that, the U.S. President pledged that the U.S. wanted to help Africa without being simply a provider of aid. "Ultimately, the goal here is for Africa to build Africa for Africans," he told a news conference.

Passengers Escape Death As Power Cut Stops Arik Plane From Landing In Uyo

What could have amounted to another major air disaster in the country was averted on Friday evening when an Arik aircraft aborted landing at Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital barely about 500 meters from the tarmac due to power cut at the airport.

The sudden power outage forced the pilot to hurriedly terminate his landing plan and fly back to the sky where it hovered for about 30 minutes before flying back to Abuja because the person to turn on the alternative power source was not available.

The passengers on Arik Flight W3 533, including the Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Chidi odinkalu, and some unnamed federal lawmakers, said to be heading to Uyo for a retreat.
