Passengers Escape Death As Power Cut Stops Arik Plane From Landing In Uyo

What could have amounted to another major air disaster in the country was averted on Friday evening when an Arik aircraft aborted landing at Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital barely about 500 meters from the tarmac due to power cut at the airport.

The sudden power outage forced the pilot to hurriedly terminate his landing plan and fly back to the sky where it hovered for about 30 minutes before flying back to Abuja because the person to turn on the alternative power source was not available.

The passengers on Arik Flight W3 533, including the Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Chidi odinkalu, and some unnamed federal lawmakers, said to be heading to Uyo for a retreat.

Senate stops N4bn first ladies’ mission house project

The Senate on Wednesday dropped the controversial African First Ladies’ Peace Mission House project when it passed the N259.65bn budget of the Federal Capital Territory for the 2013 fiscal year without approving the N4bn appropriated for it.
In February when the budget proposal was brought to the National Assembly, it contained N4bn vote for the construction of the mission house in Abuja, a development that attracted a lot of criticisms from members of the public.
The Senate, during the second reading of the bill, questioned the rationale of committing scarce resources to prosecute a less important structure.
Civil rights groups and political parties had also berated the Federal Capital Territory Administration for budgeting N4bn for the construction of the building for a non-governmental body headed by the wife of the President, Mrs. Patience Jonathan.

FG Stops Rich Senator Sponsoring Boko Haram's From Escaping Justice

The Federal Government yesterday requested the Abuja division of the Court of Appeal to reject an application by Senator Mohammed Ali Ndume over alleged involvement in terrorism. Ndume is seeking an order of the Appeal Court to stay his trial before a Federal High Court, pending the determination of his appeal challenging his trial for alleged sponsorship of terrorism in the country.
The appellate court consequently ordered parties to file written addresses on the issue and fixed October 2 for adoption of briefs.
The substantive appeal by Ndume challenging the ruling of the Federal High Court to the effect that he had a case to answer would be argued after determination of the application for stay.

Right engine of British Airways plane stops working before take-off at Abuja Airport

We got a call this yesterday from one  Ọmọ Oódua reader inside a British Airways flight at the Abuja International Airport. They told us that the BA 8:30 flight to London was preparing to take off when the right engine of the plane just stopped working. They heard a noise and then smoke. The plane had to be towed back to the tarmac.

As at the last time we spoke with one of them, engineers were trying to fix the engine. We even heard the pilot making an announcement. They are not sure if the flight will continue or if it will be cancelled, but they are all still inside the plane at the moment. BA has been given 40 minutes to fix the engine or the flight will be cancelled...for safety reasons. Will keep you .

Update: All passengers have been asked to leave the plane
Update 2: The flight has been cancelled

Confusion Looms As Mandela Stops Talking In Hospital

Anxiety over the health condition of South Africa’s first post-apartheid president, Mr. Nelson Mandela, has heightened as he has stopped talking, the Sunday Times, a South African newspaper, quoted an unnamed source close to the family.  He was rushed to the hospital on Saturday without the knowledge of his family. “He has stopped talking…he is not looking good. It’s clear that something is troubling him,” the source said of the Nobel-prize-winning icon considered as one of the world’s foremost statesmen and a living legend.
The Telegraph of London said Mandela spent a second day at the Pretoria hospital where he is said to be undergoing tests. On Saturday, he was flown from his rural home in the Eastern Cape to the capital Pretoria to receive medical attention.
