Canadians Cut off From Local Water Supplies After Billion Gallon Waste Spill

Hundreds of British Columbia residents can no longer consume water at the place where they live following a billion gallon spill of mining waste that reached rivers and creeks in the Cariboo provincial area, the CBC reports.
The open-pit Mount Polley copper and gold mine recently suffered a breach in a tailings pond, which caused 1.3 billion gallons of slurry to pour out straight into Hazeltine Creek, equaling in size nearly 2,000 Olympic swimming pools.

Passengers Escape Death As Power Cut Stops Arik Plane From Landing In Uyo

What could have amounted to another major air disaster in the country was averted on Friday evening when an Arik aircraft aborted landing at Uyo, the Akwa Ibom State capital barely about 500 meters from the tarmac due to power cut at the airport.

The sudden power outage forced the pilot to hurriedly terminate his landing plan and fly back to the sky where it hovered for about 30 minutes before flying back to Abuja because the person to turn on the alternative power source was not available.

The passengers on Arik Flight W3 533, including the Chairman of the National Human Rights Commission, Chidi odinkalu, and some unnamed federal lawmakers, said to be heading to Uyo for a retreat.

THREAT: US threatens to cut off aid to Nigeria over corruption issues, Condemned the pardon

The Obama administration on Friday threatened to cut off aid to Nigeria or even sanction the African country after the government of President Goodluck Jonathan pardoned a former governor accused of corruption.

“The United States government is deeply disappointed over the recent pardons of corrupt officials by the Nigerian government,” State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said. “We see this as a setback for the fight against corruption and also for our ability to play the strong role we’ve played in supporting rule of law and legal institution building in Nigeria, which is very important for the future of the country, obviously.”

Nigeria’s Inflation Slows as Effect of Subsidy Cut Falls Away

Nigeria’s inflation rate fell to 9 percent in January as the effect of a year-earlier reduction in fuel subsidies dropped out of the calculation.
Inflation in Africa’s largest oil producer slowed from 12 percent in December, the Abuja-based National Bureau of Statistics said today in an e-mailed report. The median estimate of seven economists surveyed by Bloomberg was 9.5 percent. Prices rose 0.6 percent in the month.
The January 2012 increase in gasoline prices after President Goodluck Jonathan cut subsidies helped keep inflation above the central bank’s target of less than 10 percent throughout last year. Central bank Governor Lamido Sanusi said last month that the rate may drop close to the target, largely because of “base effects.”

Credit Suisse, UBS may cut 7,000 jobs

UBS is to cut 3,000-5,000 jobs as part of cost-saving measures to offset falling profit, while rival Swiss bank Credit Suisse may announce 1,000-2,000 cuts, Reuters reported on Sunday.
UBS plans to shed 900 jobs in Information Technology, alongside a further 2,000-4,000 layoffs in its investment bank and other central functions, the paper said.
A spokesman for UBS, scheduled to report third-quarter earnings on October 30, would not comment on the report.
