Why I retired as Major-General — Buhari

A former Head of State, Maj-Gen. Muhammadu Buhari (retd.) on Friday said he decided to retire with his current rank in 1985, to defend and promote the integrity of the military, instead of promoting himself. Buhari said this at a public presentation of two books: “Nigerian military in politics: 1966-2011 and Politics of transition to civil rule in Nigeria” in Zaria, Kaduna State. The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the books were published by Head of Political Science Department, Federal College Education, Zaria, Nuhu Ramalan

“It was the conviction of our regime that, being the Head of State and Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces, does not mean that you are the overall General. “My ultimate goal as at then was to ensure integrity, justice, equity, accountability and transparency in the system. That was why I did away with unnecessarily promoting myself to General,” he said. Speaking on the military in politics, Buhari, the presidential candidate of the Congress for Progressive Change in the 2011 general elections, identified some weaknesses of the past military regimes to include corruption and abuse of office.

Why we annuled June 12 Presidential election — General Ibrahim Babangida

By Jide Ajani

There are many ‘ifs’ 20 years after the annulment of the June 12, 1993presidential election – that is still considered Nigeria’s freest and fairest.  If then military president, General Ibrahim Badamasi Babangida, had known that the decision to annul the election would lead to the plethora of crises that Nigeria is yet to come over, he may not have acted in that manner.  Indeed if he had known that the  electoral process today would be much worse and replete with serial instances of the reasons he gave for the annulment, he may not have done so.

General Azazi’s Last Moment

IT was just a few minutes to 13.00 hours and the service of songs was in session when our chartered Caverton helicopter landed in ancient breezy coastal community of Okoroba, hometown of Mr. Oronto Douglas, a senior aide to President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan. I had flown with my Uncle, Engr. Mayne David-West, Principal Consultant of Pearl Consultants, and George Kerley, Coordinator of The Jonathan Project and an unrepentant crusader of the president. We proceeded directly to the venue of the Service of Songs. It was a ten minutes walk from the school field where the helicopter had landed, and it offered an opportunity to see the sprawling ancient community and the new developments taking place. The people were very happy.

We are prepared for any emergency – LASEMA

Lagos State Emergency Management Agency on Tuesday said that it was prepared for any emergency arising from flooding in the state.

LASEMA General Manager, Dr. Femi Oke-Osanyintolu, gave the assurance in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Lagos.

He said the state had scaled through the heavy rains without experiencing serious flooding, due to the early preparations and the measures put in place to combat it.

“We are prepared for emergencies as we’ve  learnt from the past to prepare for the future.

“The agency has put in place adequate measures to reduce the incidence of flood.

“We have ensured continuous dredging of canals, construction of new primary, secondary and tertiary canals.

“Our preparedness has yielded results.

“Lagos State is not experiencing flooding, in spite of the fact that we are in the coastal region,” he said.

He said that LASEMA was working with engineers in all the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 Local Council Development Areas, to mitigate the effect of the flood.

Oke-Osanyintolu, however, advised Lagos residents to desist from blocking canals with refuse.

He asked them to contact the residential engineers at their respective local governments, for any flooding.

Northern elders part of Nigeria’s problems – Ex-IG

A former Inspector-General of Police, Alhaji Gambo Jimeta, on Wednesday accused members of the Northern Elders Forum of sowing seeds of discord in the country.

Specifically, he accused the elders of causing confusion in the polity in order to discredit the administration of President Goodluck Jonathan.

Responding to a comment credited to the NEF that the Jonathan administration was worse than that of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, the former police boss accused the northern elders of being hypocritical in their assessment.

Jimeta said instead of seeking real solutions to the nation’s problems, the elders “chose cowardly path to create confusion and mistrust.”

He said in a statement, “As for the unfortunate comment credited to the Northern Elders Forum that Jonathan’s government is worse than Obasanjo, it is disappointing to note that other Nigerians who should have been steering the course of nation building decided to pull those pillars down by sowing the seeds of enmity and political hypocrisy in order to distract Nigerians from the truth.

“Rather than rolling up their sleeves to actively find solutions to alleviate the suffering of Nigerians, they chose to pull us backward again and force us to play the blame game. The hydra-headed monster of collective responsibility in the nation’s down fall also has thousands of fingers pointing at those who sit in judgment in the Northern Elders’ Forum.”

Comparing the administrations of Jonathan and Obasanjo, he said, “How short is the memory of these Nigerians that they would choose to sweep away the cases of massive corruption that plagued the Obasanjo administration or the flagrant disregard of court judgments?

“What about the elections that brought the violent ethnic and religious crisis? The Jos and Kaduna crises all happened under his watch. Have they so easily forgotten the crisis in the aviation industry that saw a season of death through multiple air crashes?”

Nigeria’s policemen are least paid in the world – IG

The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, on Friday said Nigeria’s policemen are the least paid in the world.

The IG made the startling revelation at the opening of the renovated Peacekeeping Hall at the headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja.

“This is the only country in the world that police are least paid; this is the only country in the world that the police welfare is least considered.

“Our officers and men have made Nigeria proud at all times and at all places they served and are serving.

If we were able to do it outside, why are we failing here? We are not able to do it here because of the lack of equipment,” he said.
