Policemen or armed robbers?



he time was 7am and the traffic was absolutely crazy on a fateful Monday morning at the popular Gate Bus Stop, Iyana – Ipaja – Ipaja Road, Lagos. Mr. Olu Akinyemi was one of the Lagos residents trying to meander his way and see if he could get out of the terrible gridlock to get to his Ikeja office before the 8am resumption time.
Just as Akinyemi was applauding himself that he outsmarted other motorists in beating the traffic, three men suddenly appeared from nowhere in front of his car and ordered him to pull over towards the Federal Junction Bus Stop.

Policemen, families escape death as Lagos barracks collapse



Some policemen and their families escaped being crushed on Monday night when a two-storey building in the Pedro Police Barracks, Somolu, Lagos, collapsed.

PUNCH Metro learnt that the building, which served as the kitchen, bathroom and toilet extension, collapsed at about 8.30pm when most of the residents were in their sitting rooms and bedrooms.
A resident, who identified herself simply as Faith, explained that the collapse was not surprising considering the dilapidated state of the barracks.

“We don’t kill policemen except on special occasion", drama in Court as Notorious Robbers Beg for Amnesty



There was a mild drama at the office of the Lagos State Police Commissioner in Ikeja on Friday as three suspects, who were arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, were paraded before the House Committee on Police Affairs.
The suspects, Abiodun Ogunjobi, aka Godogodo; Felix Sunday, aka K Money; and Nwanyim Uche; pleaded for amnesty.

Nigerian Policemen implicated in varsity student’s killing arrested



The policemen accused of collaborating with hoodlums to kill two youths in Badagry, Lagos State, have been arrested.  They were arrested on Friday, according to the police authorities.
However, a new video made available to our correspondent identified two of the policemen as Inspector Adefemi Ashogbon, who is the station officer of the Badagry Police Division, and one Sergeant John Sonayon.  The two policemen and four other yet-to-be-identified policemen could be seen at the scene watching hoodlums beat the victims to death.

Political Reasons Behind Massacre Of Policemen, DSS Operatives In Nasarawa



Plausible reasons why the Ombatse cult killed no fewer than 100 policemen and security operatives in Eggon community of NasarawaState have begun to emerge.
Findings by Vanguard revealed that the fear by the Eggon-speaking natives of the state that Governor Alhaji Tanko Al-Makura, is planning to renege on his pledge to serve for only a term of four years, triggered the lethal onslaught.
Competent government sources confirmed to Vanguard, yesterday, that Governor Al-Makura was interested in a second term although he had served notice in 2011 to do just four years and hand over to an Eggon politician, since the area has never tasted the governorship seat in the 16 years of the state’s existence.

Nasarawa Mass Killing: 25 Missing Policemen Found Buried In Mass Grave

The death toll of policemen killed by members of the Ombatse cult in Nasarawa State has risen to 72 following the discovery of the bodies of 25 policemen that had been hitherto declared missing in a mass grave in an unnamed village in the state.Earlier, in a joint briefing, security authorities had confirmed 57 operatives, comprising 47 policemen and 10 agents of the State Security Service (SSS), killed in the ambush that took place on May 7 when they were on a mission to a village in Nasarawa State.

Following the bloody attack, the 25 policemen were declared missing because their bodies could not be found to confirm if they were dead or alive coupled with the fact that their whereabouts was unknown.

Killing of 12 policemen: MEND claims responsibility



The Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, yesterday claimed responsibility for the killing of 12 policemen in the Southern Ijaw area of Bayelsa State on Saturday.
MEND, in a statement sent to National Mirror, said it engaged some security forces in heavy gun duel in Azuzama Town, because its warning of planned attacks on oil facilities was dismissed by security forces.
The group warned that the attack was to show its seriousness to carry out its threat with more attacks.
The statement reads: “For dismissing Hurricane Exodus as an “empty threat” by the Nigerian security forces, heavily armed fighters from the Movement for the Emancipation of the Niger Delta, MEND, at about 17:00 Hrs., Saturday 06, April 2013, intercepted and engaged government security forces in a fierce gunfight lasting over 40 minutes at Azuzama, Southern Ijaw, Bayelsa State, Nigeria.

Policemen Attached To The NNPC Kill Two NSCDC Officers In Lagos, Set Pipeline Vandals Free



Two officers of Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, were ambushed and killed by police officers attached to Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation according to information relived by eyewitnesses and also confirmed with the spokesperson of the NSCDC in Lagos, Okeh Emmanuel.
Two officers involved in anti-vandal activities were fatally shot as they drove in the NSCDC operational vehicle after arresting four vandals of pipelines belonging to the NNPC after they were caught siphoning fuel.
Some officers were also injured in the attack which took place in the Ikorodu axis of Lagos.

Soldiers, policemen brutalise ABSU students



Soldiers and policemen yesterday descended on students of the Abia State University ABSU, for protesting the planned revocation of the degree awarded former governor of the state, Dr Orji Uzor Kalu by the institution. Kalu had completed his first degree programme at ABSU when he was governor and earned a bachelors degree. Surprisingly, the Abia State government recently threatened that the state s university would revoke the degree, in a move believed to be the continuation of the persecution of the former governor. Yesterday, when ABSU Senate was expected to meet over the matter, hundreds of students had converged on the administrative block as early as 7am.

Six Policemen, LASTMA Official Arrested



In a bid to curb the excesses of policemen in the Lagos State Police Command, six policemen were, weekend, arrested by operatives of the Commissioner of Police X Squad for extortion.
Also arrested were two impersonators who wore Police uniform to escort a lorry and an official of the Lagos State Traffic Management Agency, LASTMA for allegedly extorting money from a motorist. Vanguard gathered that the policemen were arrested at Oyingbo and Gbagada areas of the state while allegedly extorting money from motorcycle and commercial bus operators.
Police sources who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the operatives who were ordered by the state Commissioner of Police, Umar Manko, to rid the state of corrupt policemen, stormed Oyingbo, where they caught two Traffic Wardens and a conventional policeman attached to Area ‘C’ Command, at Oyingbo Bus-Stop, extorting money from commercial buses and lorry operators.

Three policemen shot dead as gunmen attack Elumelu’s convoy



Tragedy was Saturday night averted when the Chairman of House of Representatives’ Committee on Health, Mr. Ndudi Elumelu, narrowly escaped being killed after his convoy was ambushed by unknown gunmen at Eku community in Ethiope East Local Government Area of Delta State.
One of his police escorts , however, lost his life in the tragic incident as he was shot dead while three of his aides were seriously injured when the heavily armed gunmen opened fire on his convoy.

Daughter exposes father whose gang killed four policemen



A17-year-old girl identified simply as Simi has exposed the hiding place of her robber father to the officials of the Special Anti Robbery Squad, Lagos State Police Command.
Her father, Ife, was the alleged leader of a 10-man robbery gang that killed four policemen in Ajah during a robbery operation two weeks ago.
THE PUNCH had reported on January 15, 2012 that the dead policemen were responding to a distress call when they were ambushed by the robbers.
Simi did not give her father up easily. She gave the information the police needed to arrest her father after a four-hour non-stop interrogation.

Policemen Tortured, Shot Me Within Lagos Police HQ –Mechanic




A 30-year-old mechanic, Oladele Adebanjo, has accused the policemen attached to the Special Anti-Robbery Squad of the Lagos State Police Command of torturing and shooting him while he was in detention.
Adebanjo said he spent seven days in the SARS custody at the police command headquarters in Ikeja, over false allegations that he stole a commercial bus.

11,000 policemen deployed for Ondo poll



No fewer than 11,000 policemen have been deployed for Saturday’s governorship election in Ondo State, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

The Commissioner of  Police in charge of the election, Mr. Mohammed Indabawa, announced this on Friday in Akure while briefing newsmen.

Indabawa also said a commissioner of police would handle the security apparatus in each of the senatorial districts.

He vowed that anyone caught in electoral malpractice would be treated as a criminal.

The police boss also warned politicians against inducing security agents with money,  adding that the force was determined to ensure a free and fair election.

The commissioner, who warned against hawking around polling units, also advised those not on election duty to stay away.

He appealed to residents of the state to be law abiding and conduct themselves according to the electoral guidelines.

Nigeria’s policemen are least paid in the world – IG



The Inspector-General of Police, Mohammed Abubakar, on Friday said Nigeria’s policemen are the least paid in the world.

The IG made the startling revelation at the opening of the renovated Peacekeeping Hall at the headquarters of the Nigeria Police Force in Abuja.

“This is the only country in the world that police are least paid; this is the only country in the world that the police welfare is least considered.

“Our officers and men have made Nigeria proud at all times and at all places they served and are serving. 

If we were able to do it outside, why are we failing here? We are not able to do it here because of the lack of equipment,” he said.
