The ex-Boko Haram leader appeared at a Federal High Court in Abuja today. Sokoto is accused of masterminding the 2011 Christmas Day church bombing in Niger State, which left more than 20 people dead. His trial was stalled today due to negligence on the part of the prosecuting lawyers.

Suspected leader of a kidnap syndicate that abducted the Managing Director, Naija Plaza Hotel, Oguta, Imo state and a pregnant woman and killed them after collecting ransom from their relatives, has been arrested by Policemen attached to Ilemba Hausa division in Lagos.

The suspect, Chika Richard Nwabiarijie, who hails from Omoku Local Government Area of Rivers state, was arrested in a hotel around Ojo area, in the company of his wife.

As Nigerians continued to express outrage over Monday’s suicide bombing at a bus park in Kano which claimed over 60 lives, survivours of the bomb attack, yesterday on their hospital beds, recounted their harrowing experiences and agony, saying they saw death.
 
Abdullahi Maiagogo Gayawa, a 70 year-old wrist watch seller who was affected by the blast said: “I was at the motor park as usual for a routine business when in a middle of the transaction, I heard a loud bang that sent me sprawling on the ground.

In his account, Emmanuel Bassey, a 40-year-old bus park tout who survived the blast revealed his encounter with the suicide bomber before he struck.
Bassey who claimed to work for Ezewanta Group of Motors stated that “the guy came in a blue Golf car, I could recall that he was dark in complexion and appeared to be in his mid 30’s. He was calm during my brief interaction with him and did not look harmful. I asked him where he was going, and he said, ‘I have not decided’, and in no time some of my colleagues at the park  were rushing towards him and suddenly he sped off, applied brake close to a loaded vehicle and in a twinkle of an eye, I heard a loud bang that sent me sprawling on the ground”, Bassey explained.

UniUyo: ASUU Demands Lecturer's Release Within 24 Hours



The University of Uyo, Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Tuesday, gave the security agencies in the state 24 hours to secure the release of its member, Dr. (Mrs) Justina Udotong, who was kidnapped last Friday by yet-to-be identified gunmen.

Threatening to make the state ungovernable if Udotong was not released within the stipulated time, the association maintained that its decision was not against the state government or the school authority.

The union chairman, Comrade Anyim Nwachukwu, who issued the threat during a protest by members of the association and some students, said the threat was  against the abductors of Udotong, who is a  lecturer in the department of Biochemistry at  the University, as well as the security agencies which have failed to secure her release after five days in captivity.

Federal Court Strikes Down Government’s Oil Deregulation Policy



A Federal High Court in Abuja presided over by Justice Adamu Bello has nullified the federal government’s deregulation of the downstream sector of the petroleum industry.
 
Justice Bello in a ruling delivered Tuesday in a suit filed by Lagos lawyer, Mr. Bamidele Aturu declared the policy unconstitutional, illegal, null and void.
 
 
Update 1:
 "That the policy decision of the Defendants to deregulate the downstream sector of the petroleum industry by not fixing the prices at which petroleum products may be sold in Nigeria is unlawful, illegal, null, void and of no effect whatsoever being in flagrant violation of the mandatory provision of section 4 of the Price Control Act, cap P28, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004," the judge said.

About 45 Dead As Boat Carrying 166 Sinks In Nigeria




At least 45 people died when a wooden boat carrying 166 people fcom southeastern Nigeria capsized off the coast, a doctor said on Tuesday.
The boat left on Friday from the town of Oron, in Akwa-Ibom state, and was heading across the Gulf of Guinea to Gabon, in central Africa, when it capsized 40 nautical miles offshore, emergency services and traders said.
A doctor at a hospital in the coastal town of Calabar said they had received 45 bodies of passengers who had drowned.

Obaifaiye a.k.a "My Oga At The Top" Shem still NSCDC Lagos State commandant



Contrary to reports making the rounds that Lagos State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Mr. Obafaiye Shem, has been dismissed following his 'Oga At The Top' debacle during a live interview on Channels TV almost two weeks ago, he says and Channels TV says the report is false.  
 Shem said he was not suspended or dismissed but has been on casual leave to bury his father and will resume work next Thursday. "I am still the State Commandant of NSCDC and I am determined to work hard to expose the vandals across the State.” His wife also never went to Channels TV office to protest. 

MBGN pageant reduces age limit of contestants to 23 years from 26



To contest at the 2013 Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria pageant, you can't be more than 23 years old. For the first time since the pageant was created in the 80s, the age limit of contestants is now 23 years. (18-23) Before now it was 18-26.  The current queen Isabella Ayuk won the pageant last year at the age of 25...and the controversy over her real age was crazy. A lot of people said she was over 30. Plus the age limit for Miss World is 25, so the pageant organizers Silverbird Entertainment must have their reasons for reducing the age limit of contestants going forward.

Police DPO shot and killed in Kano as she picks child from daycare



Esther Tarimo, a Divisional Police Officer in the Daurawa area of Kano, was this afternoon shot dead by unknown gunmen as she left her child's daycare.  Esther was trailed from her child's daycare where she had gone to pick up her baby. She was attacked and killed before she got home, but her child was not harmed. Security agencies in Kano confirmed the killing but do not know those behind it or why she was killed.

A recent report showed that four dead bodies have been brought in to the accident and emergency ward of Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital and many men, women and children wounded. Recent report claims that over 60 passengers were killed while dozens got injured following the explosion. Several other casualties have also been evacuated to other hospitals across the town for emergency treatment. The blast affected both passengers in the bus that was about to exit the park and many others within the vicinity of the park. The blast caused a stampede with many people getting hurt and cars crashing. Details are still sketchy with some sources saying the explosion emanated from a car parked beside the bus while others claim it was from within the bus. See more Photos After The Break.

Dana Air To Resume Operations





The Minister of Aviation, Stella Oduah on Monday said that the suspension place on Dana airline operation has been lifted and that the company can resume flights immediately.
In a statement released by her Special Assistant on Media, Joe Obi, the Minister said the decision to lift the suspension of Dana operation was taken after a meeting between the management of the airline and federal aviation authority.

Video: Akpabio Distributes N1 Million To PDP Chairmen For ‘Mr Biggs’





The Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Godswill Akpabio on Sunday gave N1 Million each to the six Chairmen of the Peoples’s Democratic Party (PDP) from the South-South geopolitical zone who had converged in Port Harcourt for a party reconciliation session.  The Governor of Akwa Ibom, Godswill Akpabio
Mr Akpabio’s cash gift followed a speech by the Delta State Governor, Emmanuel Uduaghan, who had said that poverty is widespread among party members in the zone and that action needed to be taken to reduce the hardship faced by party members.

“If you want to prevent our members from straying to other parties, you must put food in the stomach of our supporters,” Mr Uduaghan had said.  Shortly after Mr Uduaghan spoke, Mr Akpabio announced he would distribute N1million each to party chairmen at the venue as lunch money as a way of placating them not to leave the party.  He said, “My brother Governor, Uduaghan, said our members are hungry and that we must put food in their stomach so that they don’t stray to other parties. I am giving all the state chairmen of the party N1 million each for Mr Biggs. Our members must not be hungry.”

Just In: More Than A dozen killed in Nigeria bus park explosions





Five explosions at a bus park in the northern city of Kano kill at least 25 people. 

Five explosions at a bus park in northern Nigeria's main city of Kano have killed at least 25 people in an area where Boko Haram is waging an insurgency against the government, a Reuters reporter said.
The blasts on Monday destroyed several buses in the Sabon Gari area of Kano, an area mostly inhabited by immigrants from Nigeria's largely Christian south, the Reuters witness said. Military and police cordoned off the area after the blasts.
