With less than 48 hours to another year, a communal clash has erupted in Gwako, under Gwagwalada Local Government Area of the Federal Capital Territory. The spokesman for the National Emergency Management Agency, Yushau Shuaib, who stated this on Sunday, said the clash drew the attention of the agency and the Ministry of the Capital Territory to jointly activate their Search and Rescue teams.

Sweden: The Country That Imports Wastes To Generate Power
When it comes to keeping wastes out of landfill sites, Sweden leads the way in the world. It recycles what could be reused and bums what can be safely incinerated to provide power for a quarter of a million homes. Sweden however faces a big problem, and the problem is that Swedes are too environment-conscious and therefore aren’t throwing away enough waste to feed the incinerators.

Policeman Among 5 Killed as JTF, Gunmen clash
Five people including a policeman and suspected Boko Haram members died at the weekend during a clash between the military Joint Task Force (JTF) and the Islamist sect near Potiskum in Yobe State. JTF spokesman in Yobe, Lt. Eli Lazarus said the task force conducted a ‘cordon and search’ in Yindiski area in Potiskum, at about 2pm on Saturday, leading to a bloody clash between the soldiers and Boko Haram, noting that five persons were killed while 59 suspects were arrested.

Enugu killing: Rich Nigerian Men Run For Cover
Affluent citizens of Enugu State, especially returnees from abroad are now shunning public functions, even as they have beefed up security in their homes. This is due to the killing of Dr. Ogbo Edoga, a United States-based financial economist, by gunmen on Boxing Day in his home town, Aku, Igbo-Etiti LGA of the state. Edoga was killed on December 26 this year by gunmen in the house of his kinsman where he stopped over while returning to his village home in Aku on the fateful day.

A discovery of graves by Royal Oman Police (ROP) while digging for the new border check post in the Aswad area of the province of Shinas in northern Oman has led archaeologists to the discovery of a settlement dating back to 2000 BC, according to a senior archaeologist at the Ministry of Heritage and Culture. “The check post will be built at the spot but the archaeology site will be protected,” Sultan Al Bakri, Director of Antiquity Department at the Ministry, told newsmen.

27-Year-Old Congolese Entrepreneur Launches First Africa-Designed Smartphone
A Congolese inventor has unveiled what he says is the first African-designed smartphone. It went on sale on 27 December in the Republic of Congo. 27-year-old Verone Mankou who introduced the smart phone said Elikia, the phone’s name means “hope” in the local language. Mankou, head of the company VMK, said the Android-powered device was on sale only in Congo for now, but he planned to launch it in other countries very soon.

Nigeria's first Newspaper, Iwe Irohin, has been resuscitated after 140 years of its demise. The newspaper was founded in 1859 by a missionary named Henry Townsend in Abeokuta, Ogun State. Iwe Irohin was published bi-weekly in Yoruba and English language and ran for about 8 years before its demise in 1867. It's been brought back by the Nigerian Union of Journalists, who launched it's first edition just last week

Chickens: Jigawa state bans man’s cruelty
A Nigerian state has guaranteed chickens and other poultry birds such as chickens, guinea fowl, duck and pigeon a new lease of life, at least a better, gentler handling by man, before they end up in the soup pot or the barbecue stove.
Nigeria’s Jigawa State has banned their maltreatment by man and has threatened to prosecute traders, who do so in the state. The Chairman, Consumer Protection Agency in the state, Alhaji Abdulkadir Hadejia, gave the warning during a sensitisation exercise at Furji Market in Yankwashi Local Government Area.
