JAMB Releases 2014 Admission Cut-Off Marks, Universities 180 While Poly, COE 150

The Joint Admission and Matriculations Board, JAMB, has released the cut-off marks for the 2014 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME.

The board retained the existing 180 cut-off mark for admission into universities in Nigeria.

It also pegged the cut-off marks for admission into Polytechnics and Colleges of Education (COE) at 150.

Less than 24 hours National Mirror exclusively reported how internet fraudsters contributed to the mass failure of candidates in the last Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, conducted by the Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB), the House of Representatives yesterday summoned the Registrar of the board, Prof Dibu Ojerinde, for questioning.

Chairman, House Committee on Education, Hon. Aminu Suleiman (PDP Kano), said the summons became necessary following series of complaints and protests by many Nigerians of the mass failure.

It will be recalled that the result of the exam, released last weekend, showed only 10 candidates scoring 300 marks and above from the possible 400 while a majority scored below pass mark of 180, which is 40 per cent of the total mark.

According to the lawmaker, the House heard that JAMB authorities had formally explained some reasons for the mass failure in the exam but the explanation is not enough if the content of the complaints is anything to go by.

Students have complained that the biometric verification was not properly done by JAMB officers and has resulted in not being able to view results. Many have taken to twitter & facebook to voice their complaints.

 A student had complained that she didn’t get scanned before the examination, and was told by JAMB examination officers not to worry about it. Now that the result is out she cant log in to the website to view her results.  It is reported that about 68,000 results have been withheld for one reason or another, but this number is not confirmed.  The JAMB results have been particularly lower this year with mean scores much lower that the average.  See video of protest that took place in Edo State.

JAMB: 1.2m may not gain admission – Minister

Minister of Education, Prof. Ruqqayatu Ahmed Rufa’I, yesterday said out of 1.7 million students that sat for the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), 1.2 million may not be able to gain admission to universities of their choice.

The minister who stated this during an inspection of students that sat for the examination in Abuja said the space that is available is barely 520,000 for federal, states and private institutions in the entire nation

Ruqqayatu, who wondered what would happen to the 1.2 million students that might not gain admission this year said, Her words: “I watched them taking the exam with all seriousness; I feel the pain that most of them could not gain admission in the long run.

 The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) Registrar, Professor Dibu Ojerinde has said that the proposed Computer Based Test (CBT) which will enable candidates write their examination on-line, will commence from 2013.

According to the JAMB registrar, who led the advocacy visit to Kaduna State Ministry of Education, National Board for Technical Education (NBTE), Kaduna Polytechnic and National Teachers Institute (NTI), the board will also ensure uninterrupted power supply during the examination.
He said although UTME candidates for 2013 will have options of Paper Pencil Test (PPT) and Dual Based Test (computer and paper), the board will begin full blown computer based testing by 2015.
“From now on, with the use of Computer Based Testing (CBT), candidates will get their result within 30 minutes after the examination. It will also address cases of result black out and examination malpractice.
