Mismanagement: NNPC Can’t Account For ₦500bn Subsidy Fund – Senate




The Senate on Tuesday lamented that officials of the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation failed to honour its invitation to give account of how they managed the  N32.00 removed as subsidy on each of the litre of petrol sold in the country between January 2012 and September 2013

Members of the  Senate Ad-hoc Committee on the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme raised the alarm while addressing journalists, two hours after officials of the NNPC and the Central Bank of Nigeria failed to honour an appointment with them.

Details of the  Monday/ Tuesday marathon meeting  between President Goodluck Jonathan and the leadership of Academic Staff Union  of  Universities have begun to emerge.
The PUNCH  gathered on Tuesday evening that a key component of the agreement reached by the parties was  that the Federal Government  would  inject N1.1tn into public universities in the next five years.
A reliable source, who made this known, also hinted that the strike would be called off anytime next week.
He  said the government team which was led by President Goodluck Jonathan would release   N220bn yearly into the sector beginning from 2014.

Nigerian Banks to identify customers by fingerprints next year



The Central Bank of Nigeria and the Bankers Committee on Tuesday sealed a biometric solution pact with a German Firm, Dermalog, for the development of a payment system that would be driven by fingerprints.
The move, according to the Governor, CBN, Mr. Lamido Sanusi, will help to revolutionise the country’s payment system.

Newly married Woman Dies Of Cholera After Eating Abacha Igbo Salad In Lagos




A newly married woman has passed away in Lagos State Nigeria after she contracted Cholera from a popular Igbo salad named Abacha. The victim identified as Blessing passed away yesterday at the Military Hospital in Yaba Lagos just 2 weeks after her wedding.

Since last week Thursday when she contracted the deadly disease, doctors at the aforementioned hospital had been working tirelessly to save her life. Blessing’s death has brought the no of cholera related death to 4 in Lagos since the outbreak 2 weeks ago.

Jonathan Ignores Boko Haram victims, rules out Compensation



President Goodluck Jonathan on Tuesday ruled out payment of compensation to victims of terrorists attacks carried out by the Boko Haram sect and other groups in the country.

Receiving report from the Presidential Committee on Dialogue and Peaceful Resolution of Security Challenges in the North at the Presidential Villa, the President said the government will only look at ways to help the victims get back to their businesses.

ASUU Puts the blame on IBB for decay in education sector



The Academic Staff Union of Universities has blamed former military dictator, Gen. Ibrahim Babangida for the present problems bedeviling the nation's education sector. The union believed that the former military President presided over what it described because the dictatorship of the International Monetary Fund and Structural Adjustment Programme, whose policies were used to “kill public schools” in the late 1980s.

Jonathan, ASUU meeting: Varsity teachers still undecided.



The over 12 hours marathon meeting between President Goodluck Jonathan and striking members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities ended at about 3.30am on Tuesday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja without a commitment from the union members.

ASUU President, Dr. Nasir Isa Faggae, told State House correspondent that the delegation was taking back an undisclosed message to their members following which a decision will be taken on the union’s next line of action.
 “We have had a lengthy meeting with Mr. President, robbing minds on how best to address the problem of university education in this country. We now have a message from Mr. President that we are going to take to our members and we are expecting that our members will respond appropriately to his message,” he said.

Nigerian Police: Now Armed Wing of PDP
The Progressive Governors Forum (PGF) hereby registers its dismay that for the second weekend in a row, officers of the Nigeria Police illegally stormed and disrupted a meeting by seven governors and other Nigerians going about their constitutionally guaranteed rights of association.

The police action is not only alarming but also demonstrates clearly that the force, instead of carrying out its constitutional responsibilities of maintaining peace and order in the society has become no more than the armed wing of the ruling People’s Democratic Party (PDP).
