Ebola: 400 under surveillance in Rivers, says NCDC director





The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control Project Director, Dr. Abdulsalami Nasidi, has said that the health ministry is monitoring about 400 people in Port Harcourt, Rivers State, for signs of Ebola after they came in contact with a Port Harcourt doctor who died of the disease but hid the fact that he had been exposed.

Nasidi said this on Thursday in Geneva, saying that there is a sense of “hopelessness” due to the lack of proven drugs or vaccines to treat Ebola that has infected 18 people in the country.

Ebola: 160 placed under observation in Rivers




Following the death of an Ebola victim in Port Harcourt, Rivers State during the week, at least 160 persons that made contact with the victim have been identified and put under observation.


The Rivers State Commissioner for Health, Sampson Parker, stated at a news conference at the state’s secretariat in Port Harcourt on Friday that the people had shown no signs of the Ebola disease.

He, however, said that the people were strictly under watch.

The commissioner added that the baby of the widow of the late health worker, who has since been quarantined, was in good health.

10-Yr-Old Boy Arrested For alleged Witchcraft In Rivers





A 10-year-old boy said to have allegedly converted into a pet to witch-hunt a family group in Iwofe, Rumuolumeni in Obio/Akpor Local Government Section of Rivers State has been arrested by law enforcement, reports have said.

Based on a resident of the city, a cat jumped right into a room from nowhere as the occupants were wide awake. The cat was said to have transformed to a son as they were planning on how best to chase out what they thought was just a pet, he told Vanguard.
The occupants of the area had screamed to attract their neighbours who came for their aid after the cat converted into a boy.

Explosion Rocks Rivers state Deputy Governor’s office



Rivers State Deputy Governor, Tele Ikuru. Police denied knowledge of the attack. A blast has hit the Rivers State government house, a government spokesperson said. The explosion occurred near the deputy governor, Tele Ikuru’s office in the early hours of Tuesday. There were no casualties, commissioner of information, Ibim Semenitari.

Ms. Semenitari said the explosion is suspected to have occurred after a dynamite was thrown into the building at about 3 am Tuesday.

Mufty-wearing police officers Disrupt Flag Off Of Rivers New PDP Secretariat



The crisis rocking the Peoples’ Democratic Party (PDP) has continued to spiral, and this time into Rivers state.
Mufty-wearing police officers led by Sam Okaura disrupted the secretariat flag off ceremony of the Baraje –led faction of the PDP, the secretariat is supposed to be the Rivers state chapter of the party, after the Chief of Staff of the Rivers state Governor, Chubuike Amaechi declared the secretariat open in Port Harcourt the Rivers state capital today.

Rivers crisis: Police declare Amaechi’s ADC a deserter



THE Rivers State Police Command, on Monday, declared Governor Rotimi Amaechi’s Aide De Camp, Seimeikumo Debewari, a deserter. The state police command said Debewari had seized to be the ADC to Amaechi since his disappearance and refusal to obey directives from the force.
Debewari, who is an Assistant Superintendent of Police, was said to be involved in the free-for-all that took place in the State House of Assembly on July 10, 2013.

Rivers Assembly leader,Mr. Chidi Lloyd gets ₦10m bail, released



THE embattled Majority Leader of the Rivers State House of Assembly, Mr. Chidi Lloyd, finally regained his freedom at about 4pm on Wednesday.
The Deputy Speaker of the House, Mr. Leyii Kwanee, who informed our correspondent of the development in a telephone interview, said Lloyd’s counsel had fulfilled all his bail conditions.
Kwanee said, “We have fulfilled all the bail conditions and Lloyd has been released. We have been at the Port Harcourt Prison to ensure his release. By tomorrow (today), his physician will examine his health condition.
“On Monday, we will also approach the court to appeal for a waiver of one of the bail conditions, which is the depositing of his International Passport with the court.”
Meanwhile, there was anxiety in Port Harcourt on Wednesday when security operatives took away the Majority Leader after the court granted him bail.

Turn By Turn: Rivers State Deports 113 Non-Indegenes To Their Home States



Nigeria’s Rivers state government has sent to their home states, some of the 113 beggars and lunatics removed from the streets of Port-Harcourt, the capital city. And the state has warned it will soon embark on another removal exercise. cart-wheel RIVER STATE The Chairman of the committee, Mr Mina Jamabo, said of the 113 beggars, destitute and lunatics removed from the streets,some had been taken to the state’s rehabilitation centres for treatment.

Jamabo said that non-indigenes had since been repatriated to their various states, while the indigenes would be treated by the government until they were fit to re-unite with their families. Jambo did not give the figure of the destitute sent to their home states. Mrs Stella Toby, Permanent Secretary in the state’s Ministry of Social Welfare and Rehabilitation however unfurled government fresh plans to remove beggars and destitute from streets in the state.

Rivers state fracas: Presidency wants Governor Amaechi probed



The Presidency has advised security agencies to ensure that Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi was investigated and prosecuted after his tenure in office for his alleged involvement in Tuesday’s mayhem in the state House of Assembly.
The advice was given just as the Action Congress of Nigeria urged the Police Service Commission to address  the causes of the fracas in the House  rather than the symptoms in  its  investigation  of  the role of the police in the  crisis.
The comments by the Presidency and the ACN  followed a July 9  petition  by Amaechi  to Jonathan on the free for all  that led to infliction of injuries on some lawmakers following an attempt to impeach the Speaker of the House, Mr. Daniel Amachree by a group led by Mr. Evans Bipi. Amaechi had in the petition  which was also addressed to the PSC  Chairman,  Mike Okiro,  requested the immediate transfer of the Commissioner in charge of the state Police Command,  Joseph Mbu.

Rivers crisis can lead to revolution –Deputy Speaker



The Deputy Speaker, Rivers State House of Assembly, Kwanee Leyii, in this interview with CHUKWUDI AKASIKE, commends the National Assembly for intervening in the crisis rocking the state
HOW would you describe the intervention of the National Assembly in the crisis rocking the Rivers State House of Assembly?
It is constitutionally permissible and they are acting in line with the 1999 Constitution as amended. It is a welcome development. If you recall, at various fora, I have always bared my mind that the current Assembly under the leadership of Mr. Otelemaba Amachree has been very mindful that we do not play into the game plan of certain anti-democratic elements, who are, at all cost, trying to frustrate the present democratic governance. With the intervention of the National Assembly, I think it is a welcome development. It will permit time for this crisis to die down.

N’Assembly to reject emergency rule

Organised labour and civil society groups are planning a showdown with the Federal Government should the crisis in Rivers State remain intractable.
The groups told our correspondents on Saturday that the mass action had become necessary because of the breakdown of law and order in the state which was threatening the nation’s democracy.
Even though the Presidency has washed its hands off the crisis in the state, there have been reports that President Goodluck Jonathan, his wife, Patience, and their loyalists are behind the crisis rocking the Rivers State House of Assembly.
A civil rights group, Anti-Corruption Network, on Saturday threatened that the Presidency should prepare for the “Egyptian treatment.”

Rivers State crisis: Pres. Jonathan withdraws JTF soldiers, armored cars from Gov's lodge?



That is what Sahara Reporters is reporting. According to SR, about 30 soldiers guarding the Governor's lodge have been summarily withdrawn by the Brigade Commander in charge of the Joint Task Force (JTF) in Port Harcourt at the orders of President Goodluck Jonathan.  SaharaReporters also reports that the soldiers took with them two Armored Personnel Cars (APC) usually stationed at Government House.   A military source allegedly told SR that the removal of the soldiers was ordered from Abuja. He warned that things might get bloodier in the state capital with the JTF gone from Government House leaving thesecurity of the governor and his aides in the hands of a few police officers and State Security Services agents.

Rivers Crisis: House Of Reps take over functions of Rivers Assembly ( Video)



The House of Representatives, Wednesday, passed a motion to take over the legislative functions of the Rivers State House of Assembly following the crisis that took place on Tuesday, July 8.

In approving the motion, the House said it was empowered by section 11(4) of the 1999 Constitution to take such actions and consequently asked the Inspector General of Police to redeploy the Commissioner of Police from the state to avoid the current misunderstanding between him and the governor, Hon. Rotimi Amaechi.



The resolution was taken following the adoption of a motion of urgent national importance moved by the Chairman of Rules and Business Committee, Hon. Albert Sam-Tsokwa, titled “Threat to democracy and inability of the House of Assembly of Rivers State to sit and transact legislative business.”

Rivers State House Of Assembly Update: Free-for-All Fight in Rivers State House - Witness



♦ Majority leader, Speaker beaten

The Rivers state House of Assembly in south-south Nigeria, for some minutes Tuesday, witnessed a very rowdy session after two months of adjournment as pro Governor Rotimi Amaechi legislators battled five renegade lawmakers rooting for the political opponents of the governor.

The minority lawmakers, whose agenda was to impeach the governor made the impeachment of Speaker Otelemaba Amachree and other principal officers the first priority. They thus sneaked into the House Chambers at about 8.30 am much earlier than the normal sitting of the House and smuggled in a mace.

Bayelsa State Special Adviser On Power Abducted In Rivers State



The Special Adviser to the Bayelsa state governor on power; Mr Olice Kemenanabo has been kidnapped in Rivers state, Nigeria’s south west region.
Mr Kemenanabo was abducted this afternoon around the D-line area of the capital, Port Harcourt by unknown gunmen.As at the time of this report no one could ascertain his mission in the city. Before his appointed as special adviser on power in May 2012, Mr Kemenanabo was the chairman of a committee set up by the state government to oversee power generation.

Amaechi Says Rivers Governorship To Rotate Among Ethnic Group



The Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Amaechi
The Governor of Rivers State, Chibuike Amaechi has said that the process of selecting who govern the oil rich state would rotate among the different ethnic groups in the area.
The governor disclosed this on Thursday while receiving thousands of delegates from Etche ethnic group, who had paid him a solidarity visit at government house in Port Harcourt in support of his administration.
”Any area that has produced governor before should go and sleep and allow other areas to produce,’ Mr Amaechi said. He called for the setup of Etche Enlightenment Committee to educate and mobilise the people on the need to exercise their voting power in the next elections.  He insisted that the people’s vote must count since that is one way the Rivers people will elect their leaders independently without external influence in 2015.
While blaming the current political crisis in the state on some detractors, the governor said his administration is poised to do more for the Etche people promising that his administration will not abandon them. The Chairman of the Etche traditional rulers council, Emmanuel Opurum said Governor Amaechi’s administration is godsend as Etche people has witnessed unprecedented development since his inception.
