The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has been challenged by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to strengthen its structure, reposition itself and strive to have a say in setting and implementing developmental agenda for Nigeria.

This call was made by the Director-General of the ILO, Mr Guy Ryder, who was speaking during a one-day interactive session of the International Affairs Committee of the NLC, on “International Cooperation Work,” held in Abuja,on Monday.

THERE are strong indications that a fresh crisis is brewing between organized labour and the Federal Government over the planned privatization of the assets of the Power Holding Company of Nigeria, PHCN.

Already, both parties are singing discordant tunes that have begun to heat up the system and threatened industrial peace in the Power sector that appeared to have been restored after the Federal Government and labour reached agreement late last year on the contentious terminal benefits for workers ahead of the privatization of PHCN’s assets.

Eleven months after promising to build three new refineries for the country, the Federal Government may have dumped the plan. Saturday PUNCH investigations showed that the FG may have dropped the idea because of the unresolved issue of deregulation of the downstream sector of the petroleum industry.
This development came to the fore as organised labour expressed surprise at President Goodluck Jonathan’s N161bn supplementary budget on fuel subsidy for 2012.

Gunmen have invaded the labour room of a maternity home in Nkwoegwu, Ohuhu, in Umuahia North LGA of Abia State and took away a baby delivered a few minutes back, while nurses were battling to save the mother from bleeding to death. The baby, a boy, was still dripping with blood when the evil men seized and folded him with the bed sheet in which he was lying.
