ASUU strike not politically motivated, NLC tells Jonathan

NIGERIA Labour Congress,NLC, yesterday, called on President Goodluck Jonathan to discountenance the impression that ongoing strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, was a political action against his government as nothing could be farther from the truth. After that it advised the President to tackle the crises in the education sector and prevent a shut-down of the sector.

NLC in a statement by its President, Abdulwaheed Omar, told President Jonathan that
those telling him that the strike was politically motivated were the President's enemies who rather than tell him the reality preferred to indulge in sycophancy, hypocrisy and boot-licking.

NLC Calls For Mass Protests Over Oil Theft

The Nigerian Labour Congress on Tuesday said it was high time Nigerians staged peaceful road shows and street protests against the continued loss of crude oil caused by pipeline vandalism, theft, illegal bunkering and political interference.

According to the congress, Nigerians have spoken for so long without concrete actions to stop crude oil losses, adding that it was time to take to the streets and demand decisive actions from the Federal Government.
The Vice President, NLC, Mr. Issa Aremu, said it was saddening that Nigeria was losing over 400,000 barrels of crude oil per day and nothing seemed to have been done to address the ugly development. Aremu spoke at a public hearing on the Petroleum Industry Bill organised by Patriots for New Nigeria Initiative in Abuja.

“They certainly deserve better than this” – NLC state position on pension crisis

We find it necessary to address you today on the shameful and painful circumstances in which our retired workers who are pensioners have found themselves.
PREAMBLE
For quite some time now, the administration of pension funds has been enmeshed in unprecedented corruption with some public officers, institutions of government and banks generously helping themselves to the said funds, and in the process, deny pensioners their pension. This has thrown pensioners, majority of whom are our members into penury, with some dying in queues of protracted and unending verification exercises that yield little or no result.

NNPC’s $1.5bn loan fraudulent –NLC

Organised labour on Thursday said the $1.5bn syndicated loan deal by the Nigerian National Petroleum Corporation was a conduit for looting the nation’s treasury. The Nigeria Labour Congress accused the NNPC of perpetrating a “fraudulent” dependence on fuel importation and looting of the treasury, saying the loan the government’s oil corporation said it needed to pay debts had further exposed the fraud in the management of fuel subsidy.

“If Fashola Still Smokes Despite Warnings, Then Okada Riders Have A Right To Operate” – NLC

The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) headquarters in Lagos on Monday, came short of a war front, as Motorcycle (Okada) riders encountered armed policemen, causing gridlock on the Yaba-Ojuelegba road
Apparently acting on orders, the policemen surrounded the NLC building, take-off point of the protest. This however did little to deter the organisers, Joint Action Front (JAF), as they remained adamant, saying they needed no permit to hold a peaceful rally.
