The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has been challenged by the International Labour Organisation (ILO) to strengthen its structure, reposition itself and strive to have a say in setting and implementing developmental agenda for Nigeria.
This call was made by the Director-General of the ILO, Mr Guy Ryder, who was speaking during a one-day interactive session of the International Affairs Committee of the NLC, on “International Cooperation Work,” held in Abuja,on Monday.
The ILO boss also hinted that, with its more than four million members across Nigeria, the NLC was poised to become a force to reckon with in Africa and the world over. But, the ILO Director-General, whose message was delivered by the Director, ILO Country Office for Nigeria, Ghana, Liberia, Sierra Leone, The Gambia and Liaison Office for ECOWAS, Ms. Sina Chuma-Mkandawire, warned that this formidable force could only be achieved if there was cohesion and strenghtened structure within the congress.
Though, he acknowledged the efforts being made by the leadership of the NLC to restore the glory of the congress, and for it to be truly workers’ representative in Nigeria, he pointed out that the NLC must reposition itself to also benefit from supports by international trade unions and support organisations.
