University of Nigeria Nsukka: Lecturer Commits Suicide



A lecturer in the Faculty of Law at the University of Nigeria Nsukka, Dr Bede Opata has reportedly committed suicide over a yet-to-be ascertained reason, Thisday reports. Sources within the university say the 38 year old law lecturer killed himself in his apartment within the city on Saturday July 19th but his body was just discovered on Sunday July 20th.  The lecturer who holds a doctorate degree in Law, hailed from Nsukka, Enugu state and was the son of a former Commissioner in the old Anambra state, Chief Cletus Opata.


'We know where the Chibok girls are but but we don't want to endanger their lives' - DG SSS says



While fielding questions from newsmen after today's National Security Council meeting held at the Presidential Villa, the Director General of the Department of State Security, DSS, Mr Ita Ekpeyong said that security forces know where precisely the kidnapped Chibok girls are but are being very careful in their rescue efforts so as not to endanger their lives.
"The issue of the Chibok girls, government is making efforts. We know where they are but we don't want to endanger their lives, that is the truth. We want to take it gradually and release them at the appropriate time. We know where they are" he said

 Reigning Most Beautiful Girl in Nigeria, Iheoma Nnadi, who beat 30 other girls to emerge the brand new queen last Friday July 18th says she'd always known she would be a beauty queen one day. The 19 year old South African based student/model spoke with Encomium mag after being crowned queen

"Buying a form means you are ready to become MBGN. I always knew I would be a beauty queen. Years back, the password of all my accounts was missworldforever. I have never participated in any beauty pageant before now. This is my first and I am so happy I won" she said
Iheoma is the last child in a family of 6 and has two sisters and a brother.

Photos: Gov. Fashola sets up tribunal of enquiry on recent Burning of BRT Buses



 Governor of Lagos state, Babatunde Fashola yesterday July 21st inaugurated a panel of inquiry to access the ROOT of the Friday July 4th face off between men of the Armed Forces and a BRT driver where a Soldier lost his life, and the following arson and destruction of BRT buses by the soldiers.

Governor Fashola tasked the tribunal to inquire into if the act was committed by soldiers and also unravel how and why the military officers died and what killed him, in addition to investigate what may have been done to steer clear of the accident.  

The panel which will be chaired by way of a retired Judge of the Lagos High Court, Mr Justice Ebenezer Adebajo is likely to submit its findings within 60 days. See more photos after the jump.

We won’t concede any state to B’Haram –DHQ



Security agencies in the country have vowed that they will not concede any state of the federation to the Boko Haram Islamic sect or any other terrorist organisation. The Director of Defence Information, Maj. Gen. Chris Olukolade, made the pledge at a press briefing in Abuja on Monday. The occasion was organised by the National Information Centre, chaired by the Director General of the National Orientation Agency, Mr. Mike Omeri.

Impeachment threat: Al-Makura meets President



Governor Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State has met with President Goodluck Jonathan over the impeachment process instituted against him by members of the state House of Assembly.
The PUNCH gathered on Monday that the meeting took place in the Presidential Villa, Abuja at the weekend.
A Presidency source, who did not want to be named, told one of our correspondents that the move by the state lawmakers to remove the governor was discussed at the meeting.

Buhari: GEJ has declared war on Nigeria



 PunchNg Reports.
A former Head of State, Maj. Gen. Muhammadu Buhari(retd.), on Tuesday accused President Goodluck Jonathan of waging a war against Nigeria by using the   “common wealth to subvert the system.”
Buhari made the accusation in a statement he personally signed and made available to journalists in Kaduna.
The statement titled,   “Pull back Nigeria from the brink,” is his first formal reaction to the   removal of Murtala Nyako as Adamawa State governor and the threat of impeachment against Governor Umaru Al-Makura of Nasarawa State.

Men in Uniform Kidnap Woman in Lagos



A four-man gang said to be kidnappers stormed Oshodi under bridge on Saturday, snatching a young woman at gunpoint. One of them was reported to have worn the uniform usually used by officials of the anti-robbery squad.

Punch reports that the victim was walking along with her mother when she was confronted by the men. It was said that the mother was threatened with a gun when she wanted to defend her daughter.
The gang, who were said to have arrived at the Oshodi area around 2.30pm, whisked the woman away in a Honda Pilot jeep.

Nigerian Air Force Helicopter Crashes in Borno



A Nigeria Air Force Helicopter crashed this afternoon in Bama, Borno State.  Director of Defence Information, Chris Olukolade revealed the news via a press statement: A Nigerian Air Force Mi-35 Helicopter on a training mission this afternoon, crashed due to technical fault at a location South of Bama.  Investigation has commenced to unravel the circumstances that led to the accident.  Meanwhile, it is established that the crash is not as a result of any enemy action. Further details on the crash will be made known as soon as the investigation progresses

 A lady thought to be mad today was caught with a corpse of a child thought to be around 5-year old which she packed in a nice Ghana must go  around Mile 2, very near Festac town in Lagos. A member of the Oyo State House of Assembly, Murphy Adigun-Ahmed, on Sunday said the House has no plan to impeach the state governor, Abiola Ajimobi.

Mr. Adigun-Hamed said the clarification was necessary to correct the impression making the rounds that the Assembly was planning to impeach the governor.

Traders, Residents Panic as ‘Explosion’ Rocks Enugu Market -This Day





An eleven-month-old baby was feared dead while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries, when an imaginary explosion occurred at the Eke Ozi market in Igboeze North local government area of Enugu state Friday.

The incident, which occurred at about 2:00pm few metres to the Divisional Police Headquarters at Ogrute, was suspected to be a bomb blast, making the market women and traders to scamper for safety.
