Traders, Residents Panic as ‘Explosion’ Rocks Enugu Market -This Day

An eleven-month-old baby was feared dead while several others sustained varying degrees of injuries, when an imaginary explosion occurred at the Eke Ozi market in Igboeze North local government area of Enugu state Friday.
The incident, which occurred at about 2:00pm few metres to the Divisional Police Headquarters at Ogrute, was suspected to be a bomb blast, making the market women and traders to scamper for safety.

The gloom and anger that pervaded the camp of traders at the popular Bodija Market in Ibadan over last week’s killing of 10 of their colleagues by the Boko Haram sect in Mugunu, Borno State, is giving way to tension in the city.

 

The arrival of the slain traders’ bodies in Ibadan on Tuesday stirred a torrent of tears and trauma among residents. Since then, Hausa traders in the city have been lying low. Findings by newsmen showed that there had been low turnout of Hausa hawkers at Mokola roundabout, Agodi-Gate Bus stop, Ojoo, Challenge, Beere and Molete areas, where they had hitherto been very visible.
 

At Sabo, the part of the city dominated by Hausa people, most of the bureau de change operators, car dealers and other Hausa traders in the area confined themselves to the safety of their homes.

It was a shock they never prepared for. Gathering at the home of their late leader, Alhaja Abibatu Mogaji, who until her death on June 14 at the age of 97, was the President-General, Association of Nigerian Market Women and Men, majority of them had only come to mourn their leader, for whom the family was holding the eighth-day fidau, a religious ritual for departed Muslims.

Like so many dignitaries and others from different spectrums of the society, who had converged on the late Mogaji’s Alausa, Ikeja home to take part in the eighth-day remembrance prayers for the deceased, the least the traders had expected was that on that Sunday, they would get a new leader.

Traders Arrest Six Armed 'Boko Haram' Gunmen In Maiduguri

The market had been burnt twice by Boko Haram.

Local traders at Gamboru Market in Maiduguri, Borno State, on Wednesday arrested six armed gunmen suspected to be Boko Haram members while allegedly trying to attack traders, witnesses said.

The gunmen, according to witness accounts, were spotted entering the market with their weapons hidden under their garments.

“A trader alerted us when he saw them and we immediately trailed and rounded them up,” said 36-year-old grocery merchant, Babagana Aji.

I assert that the closing down of Ladipo market by the Lagos State Government and the arrest, detention and dehumanizing of Igbo traders in that market is a clear case of oppression and injustice by powerful, primordial forces intent on dislodging the traders, dispossessing them of their assets and taking over a market they built with their own sweat and resources.
