Hoodlums attack Nigerian embassy in Berlin

The Nigerian Embassy in Berlin was attacked with paint bombs on Wednesday night by unknown persons, the police have said.

According to police spokesman, unknown attackers threw glass bottles filled with a thick and sticky liquid at the front of the building in Neue Jakobstraße, (The name of the street where the embassy is situated), the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

The spokesman said the police have handed over the investigation of the incident to state security authorities, adding that political motive may not be ruled out in the attack.

The police said security workers noticed the damage to the building on Thursday morning.

The spokesman said that on Monday, 120 activists, members of the “Refugee Protest March in Berlin campaign” gathered in front of the Nigerian Embassy to demonstrate against the practice of deporting asylum seekers from Germany.

According to him, 14 of the activists illegally entered to the embassy, in order to “occupy” it as part of the protest march.

He explained that those who entered the premises were later ejected by security officials while 25 of the protesters were temporarily detained and later released.

The spokesman stated that the demonstrators accused the embassy workers of “working closely with the German state to ensure that the processing of the largest number of deportations from Africa came from Nigeria.”

He emphasised that his agency would, however, investigate if there was a connection between the attempted occupation of the embassy on Monday and the recent paint attack on Wednesday night to the early hours of Thursday.

Concern over rising numbers of hungry people on World Food Day

Global concern is rising over the growing number of hungry persons as nations celebrate World Food day today October 16.

“It is a day designed to raise awareness about all the starving people in the world and create solutions to end world hunger once and for all,” says Yahoo!News.com.

“World Food Day was proclaimed in 1979 by the Conference of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO). It marks the date of the founding of FAO in 1945. The aim of the Day is to heighten public awareness of the world food problem and strengthen solidarity in the struggle against hunger, malnutrition and poverty. In 1980, the General Assembly endorsed observance of the Day in consideration of the fact that “food is a requisite for human survival and well-being and a fundamental human necessity,” says the United Nations.

The day is being marked at a time when the UN says one in eight people worldwide still suffers from chronic hunger.

UN organ, the Food and Agricultural Organisation, describes the figure as “unacceptable” and warns that the fight against hunger is slowing down.

“With almost 870 million people chronically undernourished in 2010-2012, the number of hungry people in the world remains unacceptably high,” FAO said in its 2012 report on food insecurity.

The latest figures show that 12.5 percent of the world’s population, or one person in every eight, has yet to be relieved of chronic hunger, it said.

To mark the day, Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, in a statement urged smallholder farmers to strengthen cooperatives to enable them to access funding and markets, the News Agency of Nigeria reports.

He said the Federal Government had recorded 3.9 million farmers on its database and had reached one million farmers directly with seeds and fertilisers.

Noting that this had ended 40 years of corruption in Nigeria’s agricultural sector, adding that farmers would get 10 million cell phones next year.

Five million of the phones will be given to women farmers to facilitate access to agricultural information.

He also dispelled fears that the flood disaster recorded in recent weeks in parts of the country would lead to food scarcity or famine.

Adesina gave the assurance that the Federal Government had mapped out strategies to address the challenge.

EFCC advises travellers not to exceed $10000 forex limit

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission on Sunday advised persons travelling out of Nigeria not to exceed the statutory $10,000 foreign exchange limit.

EFCC Secretary, Mr. Emmanuel Akomaye, who gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria in Abuja, said any traveller carrying any amount above the limit should be prepared to declare it to Customs.

Akomaye blamed Nigeria’s fraud, terrorism, money laundering and drug vulnerability on its cash-based economy and commended the National Assemby for showing commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s anti-money laundering and anti-terrorism laws.

The commission on Thursday arrested a 24 year-old Nigerian, Abubakar Tijani Sheriff, for allegedly attempting to travel out with the sum of $7 million (N1,120,000 billion).

He was arrested at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos as he was trying to travel to Dubai aboard a United Arab Emirates flight.

After his arrest, he said that he had a total sum of $4.5million.

But when he was thouroughly searched, he was found to have $7,049,444 on him.

He later confessed that he was a courier for 20 individuals who hired him to take the money for them to Dubai.

Authorities said they were working on the theory that he was a money laundering courier.

He has reportedly named 20 individuals who sent him on the errand.
