Freedom in quote: NSA phone tapping okayed by court




America’s Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court, or FISC, has granted a request from Director of National Intelligence James Clapper for the National Security Agency to continue collecting metadata concerning telephone connections with the aim of detecting foreign spies and terrorists. It once again ruled that operations of this kind comply with the law and do not violate citizens’ privacy.

Supreme Court Upholds Phone Thief’s Death Sentence



Nigeria’s Supreme Court on Friday in Abuja ordered that the ring leader of a notorious armed robbery gang, Mr. Salisu Isiaka, who has been terrorizing the people of Kwara state is to die by hanging for stealing a handset.
In a unanimous decision, the apex Court restored the decision of the High Court which had earlier sentenced Isiaka to death by hanging.
The convicted armed robber had pleaded not guilty at the trial court and had contested the death by hanging judgment passed on him.
Dissatisfied with the death sentence thrown at him by the High Court, Isiaka appealed the sentence at the Court of Appeal. He recorded a temporary reprieve at the appellate court as the death by hanging sentence was set aside and his release from prison custody was also ordered by the court.
His joy was however short-lived as he soon ran into yet another trouble.

Mob Kills Undergraduate Over Alleged Phone Theft




A SUSPECTED phone snatcher said to be an undergraduate of the University of Calabar, was killed by a mob at about 9 p.m, Wednesday, for allegedly snatching a phone and a lady’s handbag.

The undergraduate said to be operating with someone at large was alleged to have boarded a taxi at Marian Road to Calabar South and when they got to Goldie by Atu Street junction, they asked the taxi driver to stop and while stepping down from the taxi, one of them grabbed the lady’s handbag who sat next to him while the other snatched her phone.

Man Gets 45 years for stealing Gov Aregbesola’s N50k phone



A 31 year old named Kevin Ighodalo (pictured above), has been sentenced to 45 years imprisonment by an Osogbo High Court for stealing a Sony Ericsson phone said to be worth about N50,000 belonging to Governor Rauf Aregbesola of Osun State. Below is how Punch is reporting it
Ighodalo stole the phone from the pocket of Aregbesola on November 27, 2010, when the governor was being inaugurated at Government Technical College, Osogbo.
Justice Oyejide Falola, who heard the case, found Ighodalo guilty on six counts, which included conspiracy, stealing and fraud.
He was sentenced to 10-year imprisonment for the first three counts and five years for each of the last three which included impersonation, obtaining property by falsehood and collusion.
Falola, who ruled that Ighodalo deserved the jail term, held that the convict used the phone to obtain N500, 000 from the Owa of Ilesa, Oba Adekunle Aromolaran, while he obtained N200, 000 from Mr Shengen Rahman, an associate of the governor.

Man gets 3yr jail term for stealing phone, as pension boss is freed for stealing N2 Billion

 The man was sentenced to three years in jail for stealing a telephone handset worth N17, 000 even as pension thief who stole N2billion is freed
Less than 24 hours after an Abuja High Court sentenced Pension Thief John Yakubu Yusuf to two years in prison for admitting to stealing around N2 billion, an Ikare Magistrate Court in Ondo State has sentenced another man to three years in prison for stealing a telephone handset worth N17, 000.
The Abuja court had on Monday sentenced the former director of the Police Pension Board, John Yakubu Yusuf, to two-year imprisonment.

Woman Beats Boyfriend To Death Over Phone-Call



A woman has been arrested by the police after she brutally killed her boyfriend by hitting him with an empty beer bottle on the forehead several times.30-year-old Winnet turned violent, accusing her late boyfriend, Simon (33) of infidelity after the deceased had received a phone call. The infuriated Winner was eager to know the identity of the caller but her boyfriend failed to answer her. This resulted in the bottle assault. Police confirmed the murder which happened on December 22 at a bottle store in Chikanga.

Botswana Babies 'Being Delivered Using Mobile Phone Lighting'





Midwives at a Botswana clinic are using their mobile phones as a source of light when delivering babies at night due to a lack of electricity in Kweneng district to the country’s south-east, Africa Review reports.
Kweneng East legislator Moeng Pheto this week told Parliament that the situation was bad and nurses have been left with no choice but to use cellphone lighting when monitoring the progression of labour in pregnant women.
