All the casualties so far have been confirmed in Gansu province, according to the local government.
The quake hit near the city of Dingxi in Gansu province, one of the least populated in the whole country. However, the Dingxi area has a great concentration of farms and towns. The earthquake was also felt in neighboring cities of Longnan, Tianshui, and the provincial capital city of Lanzhou.

The initial tremor happened at around 23:45 GMT on Sunday and reportedly lasted for over a minute. The Chinese seismological bureau initially measured the quake at magnitude 6.6. The first tremor was followed by a series of quakes, including a magnitude-5.6.
Strong earthquake strikes China
A strong and shallow earthquake struck central China on Monday, the United States Geological Survey said.
The USGS said the 5.9 magnitude quake, initially reported as a magnitude 6.0, struck 97 miles (156 km) west of Tianshui in Gansu province and at a depth of 0.6 miles (1 km).
There were no immediate reports of damage or injury.
