An early morning inferno on Wednesday gutted the Katako Market in Jos,
the Plateau State capital, destroying goods worth millions of naira. Our correspondent gathered that the inferno started at about 1am on Wednesday and lasted for some a few hours. Most of the items destroyed by the fire were building materials, food items, household items and fairly used clothes. The Director of Fire Service, Plateau State Command, Mr. Michael Dung,
who confirmed the incident, said the cause of the fire had yet to be
established. He described it as a sad development. Dung said, “When we got the news of the outbreak of fire at the market,
our men immediately mobilised to the scene with six fire trucks and it
took us about eight hours to put out the fire. He said investigations were ongoing to determine the immediate cause of the fire.
A similar fire razed the Jos Main Market in 2002, but 11 years after, the market has yet to be rebuilt.
