Nigeria and the United States of America is to strengthen bilateral relations in the defence sector, says Chief of Defence Staff, Admiral Ola Ibrahim.

Ibrahim said this when the United States House Armed Services Committee Congressional Ddelegation, led by the Vice Chairman, Mr Mac Thornberry, visited the Defence Headquarters.

“America qualifies to be friend of our country and the spirit underlines their visit here today to relate with us on defence and related issues on one hand, how we manage our local matters of insurgence, and on the other hand, how we participate in the African meeting support mission in Mali.”

The Nigerian army paraded two men they said allegedly kidnapped a staff of Petroleum Training Institute Warri, took her to an undisclosed hotel, raped her, took photographs of the act and threatened to release the photos if she does not pay N10m. Watch the Channel TV report above...

TRAGEDY: Over 30 houses, shops razed in Ibadan petroleum tanker accident

The sad incident occurred yesterday afternoon Monday April 22nd in the Omitowoju area of Ibadan, in Oyo State. The fire started after a fully loaded petroleum tanker passing through a residential area fell off the road and spilled its 33, 000 litres of petrol.   Over 30 houses and and at least 30 shops in the area were burnt to ashes. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) eventually put out the fire but couldn't say for sure if anyone was killed by the fire.

According to Punch, the Ogun State Police Command arrested a man named Edwin Alagbaso, for allegedly torturing his 12-year-old ward who was a rape victim. The man basically blamed her for 'causing' the rape and tortured her with razor blade, knife and iron rod. The young girl sustained injuries to the scalp, had swollen fingers, bruised abdomen, swollen eyes and mouth.

The 12 year old victim was raped on April 15th by a 22 year old man named Uche  Chibueze, near her guardian's home in Akute. Uche told police it wasn't rape, that it was consensual sex. 

You have to be sick in the head to have sex with a 12 year old girl.

Naples mafiosi were convicted last week of forcing a Nigerian cancer patient, Lilian Solomon, into prostitution. The situation is worse that we think. Read a report from Daily Beast about how Nigerian girls, as young as 13, are sold and forced into s-ex slavery in Italy...

Across Italy, Nigerian women are forced into the s-ex trade, essentially kept as slaves who are bought and sold and moved according to a moribund supply and demand. Some of the prostitutes are young girls, just 13 or 14 years old. Others are in their 20s or 30s. Many have children. Some are still married to men in Nigeria. They usually sit on white plastic chairs under umbrellas to protect them from the rain in the winter and the harsh sun in the summer. 

The highest concentration of Nigerian forced s-ex workers is in and around Naples, but they are not limited to the southern reaches. On Thursday, in the central region of Abruzzo, four Nigerian gang members and an Italian taxi driver who allegedly procured prostitutes across the country were sentenced to between nine and 15 years in prison for making 23-year-old Nigerian Lilian Solomon prostitute herself even though she was in the late stages of lymphoma cancer.

This is an outrage! Over 40 policemen and officials from the Waste Water Management and Sewage Board, an arm of the Ministry of Environment, this morning stormed the mechanic workshop of Nigeria's first woman auto mechanic, Sandra Aguebor-Ekperuoh, and sealed the place. Her auto workshop, where she employs only female mechanics, is situated by 1004 in Victoria Island. 

Sandra, who has been an auto mechanic for the past 27 years, runs an NGO that empowers women called the Lady Mechanic Initiative where she has empowered and graduated over 150 women in Lagos State alone. Sandra has over 150 women mechanics in Abuja and 100 women mechanics in Benin where 50 of the girls are graduating in three weeks time. 40 of them will be employed by Sandra immediately after graduation in her Lagos, Benin, Kaduna and Abuja workshops. Some of the girls who have passed through her are now self employed with their own mechanic workshops and even training other female mechanics. This woman has done so much to empower women in this country and helped to reduce prostitution in her home state Edo, so it's so sad to see this happen to her. We should be celebrating this woman, not taking land from her. 

She trains these girls for free, still gives them a salary and accommodates them. The land that was sealed today houses the Lady Mechanic Workshop and a hostel for her girls where the girls, some of them orphans, stay rent free. 

Their reason for sealing the place? They are saying the land belongs to the Lagos State government. Thing is, Sandra has been on that land for the past 10 years. I've spoken with Sandra myself and she's devastated but staying strong for her girls. See photos of the sealed workshop after the Break.

It was another evil haul of mystery corpses as no fewer than 60 bodies on Thursday night arrived the Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital in Damaturu, the Yobe state capital. Though the police and the JTF in the state were curiously silent about where the bodies were brought from and where they died, a dependable security source revealed they were victims of a bloody gun battle between a dreaded Islamist sect and JTF troops during a raid.

The source said the JTF had carried out "a discreet operation around Gujba Local Government Area on Thursday evening to smoke out suspected terror sect men" from their hideout but the operation snowballed into a fierce battle between the security agents and the militants. "Sixty four terror suspects died in the gun duel," the top security personnel who did not want his name in print, disclosed. The reaction of the authorities of the Sani Abacha Specialist Hospital in Damaturu could not be obtained as at press time.

French family held in Northern Nigeria return safely to France

The French family, father, mother, their four kids and father's brother, who were abducted in Cameroon on February 19th 2013 by Islamist militants and brought to Nigeria, have returned safely to France. They were welcomed by their family members and the president of France.

The Moulin-Fournier family, who were based in Cameroon, were kidnapped while visiting a national park in the northern part of the country. A few days later, they were taken to northern Nigeria where they were held by members of Boko Haram who asked Cameroon to free detained members of their group before they free the abducted family. The French family returned to their country yesterday Saturday April 20th. No word yet on how they were released.

HER situation looked hopeless and precarious. As she slept on the sofa, her mother wondered if miracles still happened. Anna’s health had deteriorated so rapidly that those who saw her a week before immediately beseeched whatever extraterrestrial powers that they knew to come to the ill girl’s aid. Weeks gave birth to months and her condition only worsened. Her father (Chukwudi), a self-proclaimed pharmacist, had dealt over the years in illicit drugs, and had sold same to many unsuspecting buyers. His family was oblivious of his dealings; they had trusted him implicitly. He had met with his friends hoping that they could help. He moved Anna to various medical centres but she was referred from one hospital to another. Anna’s father could no longer afford the bills; he took his daughter home, resorted to spiritual help and resigned to fate.

How Did We Get Here?Before the infamous failed bid of the “Underwear Bomber”, Farouk Abdulmutallab, terrorism seemed to be alien to Nigeria. Terrorism was only heard of in the news and read about in the newspapers. Even after the failed attempt to blow up the Detroit bound flight on December 25, 2009, Nigerians were quick to denounce the act and deny the bomber. Nigerians were quick to claim that the young man schooled abroad and was initiated and indoctrinated into the ways of the sinister world of terrorism outside the shores of Nigeria. 

Not very long after, Nigeria found its way to the terror watch list. Nigeria was listed as a “country of interest”. The Nigerian government even went as far as giving the US an ultimatum to delist the country from the countries on the terror watch list. The Government even stated then that Abdulmutallab could not be used as a yardstick for the over 150 million people in Nigeria.

By next year, this geographical entity called Nigeria would have existed for 100 years and going by reports from the Presidency, there will be a massive centenary celebrations to mark our 100 years of existence but a fundamental and germane issue needs to be addressed and it’s more desirable than rolling out the drums to celebrate.

Hundred years in the life of a nation is not a child’s play. Obviously and indisputably  a lot of things have happened. It will be of little or no use dissipating energies on discussing the inexhaustible adventures and events of this “soon to be” 100-year old nation. Rather the emphasis on the mind of any right thinking individual should be if truly the Nigerian state should still remain as one indivisible entity.

BETWEEN the administrations of George Washington and Jimmy Carter, the Alien Tort Statute (ATS) lay dormant. The statute grants American district courts jurisdiction over “any civil action by an alien for a tort only, committed in violation of the law of nations or of a treaty of the United States”. At the age of 190 it sprang back to life on April 6th 1979, when it was used to allow two Paraguayans to sue a former Paraguayan policeman in an American court for acts of torture committed in Paraguay.

Since then, roughly 150 lawsuits have been filed against American and foreign corporations for actions committed around the world. Four local plaintiffs used the ATS to sue Unocal in a federal court in Los Angeles for human-rights violations allegedly committed during the construction of an oil pipeline in Myanmar. A human-rights organisation used it to sue Yahoo on behalf of two Chinese democracy activists for actions committed in China by a subsidiary. ATS suits against DaimlerChrysler and Rio Tinto, among others, are pending. Nigeria: Kidnapped high-ranking Lagos govt. official released unhurt

Security - Mr. Kehinde Bamigbetan, Chairman of the Ejigbo Local Council Development Area, a suburb of Lagos, the commercial capital of Nigeria, who was abducted by gunmen Monday, has been released unhurt, according to local media reports.

The reports said the Head of the Council’s Information Unit, Rabiu Hassan, confirmed the release of the Chairman who was kidnapped Monday.

The reports said Mr. Bamigbetan, who was abducted a few metres from his home, was released over night Friday after the kidnappers collected over 20 million Naira (about US$ 133,000) in ransom.

The reports said the kidnappers had asked for a ransom of US$ 1 million.

Family members said Mr. Bamigbetan, a former Chief Press Secretary to former Governor Bola Ahmed Tinubu, is in good health.
