Why Security Situation Was Better During Our Time – Atiku

Alhaji Atiku Abubakar has described the current wave of insecurity in Nigeria as worse than the Nigeria Civil War, which lasted for three years.
The former Vice-President said on Friday that the situation was made worse due to President Goodluck Jonathan-led administration’s lack of attention to security of lives and property.
Atiku made this known on Friday in an interview with the Hausa Service of the British Broadcasting Corporation monitored in Kaduna.
He said, “All you see today are security men with guns, which should not be the case.”
He said the dimension of today’s security challenges makes it hard to tackle because the money meant for the purpose had been allegedly stolen.

Terrorism and The Nigerian Situation

How Did We Get Here? Before the infamous failed bid of the “Underwear Bomber”, Farouk Abdulmutallab, terrorism seemed to be alien to Nigeria. Terrorism was only heard of in the news and read about in the newspapers. Even after the failed attempt to blow up the Detroit bound flight on December 25, 2009, Nigerians were quick to denounce the act and deny the bomber. Nigerians were quick to claim that the young man schooled abroad and was initiated and indoctrinated into the ways of the sinister world of terrorism outside the shores of Nigeria.

Not very long after, Nigeria found its way to the terror watch list. Nigeria was listed as a “country of interest”. The Nigerian government even went as far as giving the US an ultimatum to delist the country from the countries on the terror watch list. The Government even stated then that Abdulmutallab could not be used as a yardstick for the over 150 million people in Nigeria.

The 'Goldie Situation', By Eseoghene Al-Faruq Ohwojeheri

By Eseoghene Al-Faruq Ohwojeheri, Benin City
About ten years ago I lost a friend in an armed robbery incident. Obviously, the armed robbers were not satisfied with robbing. They needed to make a point by harming someone in the house and my friend's mother was their target. As they swung the axe, my friend, who was the scholar of our class in secondary school, protected his mother with his head… He died. No national award, no postmortem speech from the Governor and, of course, no celebrity burial; he was just another guy, the fact that he took a battle axe to his head for his mother was irrelevant.
