About ten years ago I lost a friend in an armed robbery incident. Obviously, the armed robbers were not satisfied with robbing. They needed to make a point by harming someone in the house and my friend's mother was their target. As they swung the axe, my friend, who was the scholar of our class in secondary school, protected his mother with his head… He died. No national award, no postmortem speech from the Governor and, of course, no celebrity burial; he was just another guy, the fact that he took a battle axe to his head for his mother was irrelevant.

He claimed he mistook his girlfriend for a burglar when he shot her, but South African police has dismissed the claim. They believe the blade runner killed his model girlfriend, 29 year old Reeva Steenkamp, in a fit of rage possibly caused by performance-boosting steroids. 

First steroids were found in his home. Then Reeva was found in her night wear, which means she didn't just enter his home at the time he shot her at 3am Thursday morning. The police found a bloody cricket bat in the bedroom. Reeva's skull had been 'crushed' in the attack according to police. They also found a smashed bathroom door. Plus neighbours claimed they heard argument coming from his home earlier in the evening.

The trial is beginning in Spain of a man accused of murdering and beheading a British grandmother in a supermarket on the holiday island of Tenerife. Jennifer Mills-Westley, 60, was killed in the resort of Los Cristianos in the Canary Islands on 13 May 2011. 

 Bulgarian man Deyan Deyanov, 29, is charged with her murder and will stand trial before a jury at the provincial court in Santa Cruz de Tenerife starting on Monday. Prosecutors are expected to ask for a sentence of 20 years in a mental asylum because he has chronic paranoid schizophrenia.
