Faces of corruption in churches

New writer, Uzo Ngoladi, exposes the corrupt activities of Christian leaders in his new book entitled Toxic Eucharist, writes CHUX OHAI
It is not often that writers of the present generation in Nigeria are emboldened to tackle issues relating to religion straight on. Nowadays, many of them would rather shy away from such ‘damnable’ subjects than incur the wrath of bigots too blinded by doctrine to see reason in contrary opinions.
But it seems that Uzo Ngoladi, author of the Toxic Eucharist, has clearly chosen to rush in where angels fear to tread. The writer’s new novella is bound to provoke conflicting and diverse reactions from Nigerians as it hits the bookshops anytime soon.

Man Faces Trial For Using The President's Poster As Toilet Paper

A Zimbabwean man recently landed himself in trouble after he allegedly used President Robert Mugabe's campaign material as toilet paper, a report said on Wednesday.
According to the report, the man appeared in court last week charged with violating the electoral act or, alternatively, destruction of political material.  A public prosecutor told the court that on 24 July this year, Takura Mufumusi entered a bar toilet in Masvingo with the intention to relieve himself. While inside, he was spotted by the informant, tearing up Mugabe's poster which he found inside and allegedly using it as toilet paper. The informant immediately effected a citizen's arrest on Mufumusi and took him to a police station. Court papers, however, did not state if Mufumusi was arrested after he had already relieved himself. Magistrate Tinashe Ndokera adjourned the matter indefinitely as the State could not identify the witness. -

Reported Saudi paralysis sentence ‘outrageous,’ rights group says

“This incredibly harsh sentence for a peaceful blogger makes a mockery of Saudi Arabia’s claims that it supports reform and religious dialogue,” said Nadim Houry, the deputy Middle East director at Human Rights Watch. “A man who wanted to discuss religion has already been locked up for a year and now faces 600 lashes and seven years in prison.”

Blackberry faces ban in Nigeria

Blackberry services could be at risk of being banned in the country as a new regulation by the Nigerian Communications Commission, NCC, will run counter to the technical operating standards of the phone’s distinct network.
National Mirror exclusively gathered yesterday that the telecoms regulator was working on a regulation, which would make it mandatory for any licensee in the nation’s telecoms market to provide access to its communications facilities for necessary interception by the law enforcement agencies.
To be called ‘Lawful interception of communications regulations”, the regulation, which is currently at the draft stage, is based on the need to provide a legal and regulatory framework for the lawful interception of communications in Nigeria and the collection and disclosure of intercepted communication.

Woman Faces Jail For Attempting To Kill A Pregnant Woman And Steal Her Foetus

A woman who confessed to police that she tried to steal a baby by killing a pregnant woman and cutting out the full-term foetus was sentenced Thursday to life in prison with no chance of parole.
Annette Morales-Rodriguez, 34, was convicted in September of two counts of first-degree intentional homicide in the deaths of 23-year-old Maritza Ramirez-Cruz and her fetus. According to trial testimony, Morales-Rodriguez was distraught over her inability to give her boyfriend a son, had already pretended to have two miscarriages and was faking a third pregnancy when she devised a plan to abduct the woman, carve the child from her womb and pass it off as her own. The convictions carried mandatory life sentences, so the only question for Judge David Borowski was whether Morales-Rodriguez would be allowed the possibility of parole. Wisconsin does not have the death penalty.
