No strikes have been made yet but the US has made humanitarian air drops to Iraqis under threat from the militants.

The former Sydney residents will be arrested if they return to Australia, the statement said.
Photographs posted last week on a Twitter account linked to Sharrouf showed Elomar smiling and holding the severed heads of two Syrian soldiers.

John Kerry arrived in Iraq's Kurdish region Tuesday in a US diplomatic drive aimed at preventing the country from splitting apart in the face of Sunni militants pushing towards Baghdad. Iraq's security forces have managed to retake a crucial border crossing along the frontier with Syria, but were struggling to contain advances by insurgents, led by the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), who have taken swathes of five provinces north and west of the capital.

Most of the dead were civilians, said Rupert Colville, the spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights. He added that the tally of dead "should be viewed very much as a minimum."

US Defense Secretary Chuck Hagel ordered an aircraft carrier moved into the Persian Gulf on Saturday, readying it in case Washington decides to pursue a military option after insurgents overwhelmed a string of Iraqi cities this week and threatened Baghdad, according to Reuters.

"The order will provide the Commander-in-Chief additional flexibility should military options be required to protect American lives, citizens and interests in Iraq," the Pentagon said in a statement.

Obama to take several days to consider how to act on Iraq

President Barack Obama said on Friday he will take several days to review options for how the United States can help Iraq deal with a militant insurgency, saying any action would need significant involvement by Iraq itself, according to Reuters. "The United States is not simply going involve itself in a military action in the absence of a political plan by the Iraqis that gives us some assurance that they are prepared to work together," Obama said, demonstrating a reluctance to send US troops into battle in Iraq.

"We are not going to be able to do it for them," he added.

Anger, Disbelief as Obama Defends US Invasion of Iraq

'In order to not appear hypocritical, Obama rewrites history around Iraq War while denouncing Russia'

- Jon Queally, staff writer
President Barack Obama delivers a speech Palais des Beaux-Arts (BOZAR) in Brussels. (Reuters)President Obama is on the receiving end of scorn for remarks made during a high-profile speech in Brussels on Wednesday in which he defended the U.S. invasion of Iraq in an attempt to chastise Russia for recent developments in Crimea and Ukraine.
Speaking to the international community about the ongoing crisis in Ukraine and fending off repeated accusations that the U.S. has lost its moral authority given the invasion of Iraq and other breaches of international law in recent years, Obama said:

Russia has pointed to America’s decision to go into Iraq as an example of Western hypocrisy. Now, it is true that the Iraq war was a subject of vigorous debate, not just around the world but in the United States, as well. I participated in that debate, and I opposed our military intervention there.

FRAUDULENT WAR: US condemns chemical attack in Syria, but they did the same earlier in Iraq

Lately US President Barack Obama claimed the ‘red line’ for the US to consider a more definitive response against the Syrian regime would be “seeing a whole bunch of chemical weapons moving around or being utilized”. At the same time there is evidence that the US themselves used weapons containing poisonous chemical substances during its invasion in Iraq. More than that, Great Britain, a long-time US’s ally, supported the North American nation in that. Another US’s ally, Israel, has also been spotted in the use of chemical weapons.
