Governor Fashola, who spoke while handing over the Ejigbo-Ajao Link Road and Bridges recounted the commitment made by the former governor of the State, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu which led to the construction of the roads and bridges.
Describing the effort as rebuilding the state’s commonwealth, the Governor noted, “We have undertaken these two bridges and four roads as part of our inner road commitment we made to you. From community to community, the network grows. They are merely transport solutions happening in communities where the ordinary citizens live.
While describing the events of year 2002 which led to the death of many Nigerians as a demonstration of the failings of the Federal Authorities, he noted that the Federal Government had carried on like nothing has happened.
He noted that the NNPC, which operates in Ejigbo had failed as a socially responsible entity as it has largely neglected the road network which services the depot and other roads used by tankers lifting fuel.
He said his administration is reconstructing the Ejigbo Road and needs to put in place major drainage solution which will take time and effort. Hence urged the people to be patient noting the drainage will bear the quality signature his administration is noted for.
He further stated that Lagos State government being a responsible government has fulfilled the promised made 12 years ago by his predecessor, Asiwaju Tinubu to construct a link bridge, noting that his administration further extended its gestures to the victims of the bomb blast by reconstructing the damaged schools and hospital within the Ikeja Military Cantonment.
He stressed that the choice of 2 bridges was to avoid demolition of properties along the right of way hence the roads were built round the houses. He added that government is willing to compensate the survival of the victims but needs cooperation from them for proper verification.
Fashola while commending some corporate organizations for their contributions to infrastructure development of the area urged others to emulate such gestures as it will go a long way in bringing the needed change.
He revealed that Lagos State government has taken up the responsibility of the Federal Government by engaging a contractor on the reconstruction of Ejigbo Road which was damaged by the activities of NNPC’s truck drivers along the corridor. adding that challenge being faced now is the drainage which has to be sorted out first before the completion.
The Governor while commending tax payers stressed that their money has been the cornerstone to infrastructure development and urged those who have not been paying their taxes to have a change of their attitude.
Earlier in his address, Commissioner for Works and Infrastructure, Dr. Kadri Obafemi Hamzat stated that the provision of the link road and bridge is another promise fulfilled by the administration which is to link up communities and make it easier for people to move.
He noted further that the essence of the link road is to create a link that will eliminate traffic congestion. And alluded to the Businessday paper report which stated that by the construction of the link road traffic has been reduced by 75 minutes.
Dr Hamzat reiterated the commitment of the State government in solving people’s traffic hardship by constructing more roads along the corridors such as Kolawole Shonibare and Akin Okoye Streets.
The commissioner therefore urged people to desist from dumping garbage in the canal and enjoined them to desist from cutting the road for any reason as service ducts have been provided.
