According to reports by San Francisco Gate, the 66 year old woman was led to believe that the Nigerian scammer was a British citizen stuck at sea on a Scottish oil rig.
Investigators who traced the man’s Skype account and e-mail address to Nigeria, revealed that the man communicated with her all the time via phone and sms as well as sent her flowers.
He later asked her to loan him money to run a business. The Nigerian scammer is said to have created a fake website, where the woman was listed as an official of the company.
The divorcee wired $200,000 from her retirement account to a Turkish bank as requested by the scammer. After she realized that she has been conned, she immediately notified authorities.
An associate of the scammer Wisdom Onokpite showed up at the Turkish Bank to withdraw the money, and was arrested immediately. Wisdom is said to have entered Turkey with a fake passport.
The news puts the spotlight on the increase of online fraud.
