The Senate on Thursday passed the State Of the Nation Bill into law which compels the incumbent President to present a state of the nation address before the joint session of the National Assembly.
The bill seeks to make the President accountable to Nigerians as represented by the National Assembly and to render an account of the President’s stewardship to the nation.
The bill, which was a product of concurrence between the House of Representatives and the Senate, was first passed into law by the 6th National Assembly but the President; Olusgeun Obasanjo, withheld his assent from it.
This compelled the 7th and incumbent National Assembly to re-introduce the bill.
Section 3 of the bill stipulates that whenever the President fails to present his State of the Nation Address, the National Assembly would by a resolution supported by two-thirds of the votes of each chamber summon the President to address the nation.
At plenary session on Thursday, Senate President, David Mark urged President Goodluck Jonathan to sign the bill without delay.
