Russia Says NATO Revives 'Cold War' Rhetoric to Justify Military Spending




The Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday that NATO has revived its 'Cold War'-type propaganda against Moscow to justify the alliance’s military buildup and defense spending.
In a Sunday interview with French newspaper Midi Libre, Rasmussen said the alliance would draw up new defense plans in the face of alleged "Russia's aggression" against Ukraine, and again encouraged NATO countries to increase their defense spending.  "It's all done to justify the alleged need to 'rally its ranks' in the face of an imaginary external threat to NATO, to increase military expenditure and to boost the demand for the alliance in the 21st century," the ministry said.

Ebola: No scientific proof of bitter cola potency – Minister



The Health Minister, Prof. Onyebuchi Chukwu, has said there is no scientific evidence of bitter cola potency in the cure and prevention of Ebola virus disease.
The research work that people are laying claims, to according to the minister is inconclusive.
It would be recalled that in 1999, a former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Maurice Iwu, alongside some American researchers conducted a research that showed that extract from bitter cola tend to neutralize the effects of virus. But the outcome of that research work has not been scientifically confirmed to be true or not.

Oyinlola Finally defects to APC



The estranged National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party and a former Governor of Osun State, Prince Olagunsoye Oyinlola, has said that he will defect to the ruling All Progressives Congress in Osogbo today.
When contacted on the telephone by our correspondent, on Monday, Oyinlola, who confirmed that he would join the APC, said: “So it is. I am joining the APC.”

FG not involved in Kaduna bombings – IGP



The Acting Inspector General of Police, Suleiman Abba, has declared that findings by police investigators on the July 23 twin bombings in Kaduna State indicated that the Federal Government had no hand in the attacks.
A former Head of State and chieftain of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Muhammadu Buhari, who was reportedly the target of the attacks, escaped by the whiskers. His convoy, including the vehicle he was traveling in was however badly damaged by the blasts.
Critics of the government, including the leadership of the APC had raised the alarm, accusing the federal government of having a hand in the attempt on Buhari’s life.

Al- Makura appears before panel, dismisses allegations




Governor Umaru Tanko Al-Makura of Nasarawa State has dismissed as spurious and unfounded the 16-count allegations of misconduct levelled against him by the state House of Assembly.
His lawyers also urged the panel to “enter a notice of dismissal of the impeachment notice served on the governor for wants of proof” of the allegations.

Another hero is gone: Young Captain killed in Borno today (photos)



 Captain Benjamin Toyiring Sule was killed in the line of duty in a ambush in Bama, Borno State today August 4th by Boko Haram men. He got married just last November. He was posted to Borno state just four months ago. He's survived by his parents, siblings and young wife. Too sad! May his soul rest in peace....

Japanese Sanctions against Russia May Go into Force on August 5 - Reports



The Japanese sanctions against Russia, announced last week, may come into effect on Tuesday, the Kyodo news agency reported, citing a diplomatic source.  Japan's government may approve the package of sanctions during a cabinet meeting on August 5, which would bring them into effect in the second half of the same day, the agency said.

On July 28, the Japanese government released a list of new sanctions against Russia amid the Ukraine crisis. The sanctions foresee the freezing assets of people "involved in the Crimea annexation and responsible for destabilizing the situation in Ukraine."

Gunmen kidnap Bayelsa Speaker’s brother






Gunmen in early hours of Monday abducted Mr. Iniokpoemi Benson, a younger brother to the Speaker of Bayelsa House of Assembly, Mr. Kombowei Benson. Their state Commissioner of Police, Mr. Hilary Okpara, who confirmed the incident, said the victim was abducted at about 3am at his residence in Korokorosei village in Southern Ijaw local government part of the state. Okpara told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in a telephone interview in Yenagoa that the authorities special anti-kidnap squad was on the trail of the kidnappers. 
“We have got information on the incident, the DPO in the area and the Assistant Commissioner of Police have briefed me and the good thing is that we have known the direction the hoodlums are heading to so we shall round them up,” Okpara said.

Bangladesh ferry capsizes with hundreds aboard.




DHAKA, Bangladesh (AP) — A passenger ferry carrying hundreds of people capsized Monday in central Bangladesh, a government official said. Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Authority Chairman Samsuddoha Khondaker said M.V. Pinak was crossing the River Padma in Munshiganj district when it capsized. Local media reports said that up to 250 passengers were on board when the accident happened but this could not be independently confirmed.

R.I.P: Fast rising singer Bbee dies at 30






Promising musical artist Blessing Eloho popularly known as Bbee has died. The singer died on Sunday July 27th after a brief illness just days after she returned from a trip to the US. The Delta state born, Lagos State University graduate was only 30 years old. Too sad! May her soul rest in peace, Amen. ...

Madwoman Stones her Baby to Death in Abia State





A young men­tally challenged woman caused a stir in Aba, Abia State at the week­end when she gave birth to a set of female twins on a heap of refuse and stoned one to death be­fore the police were in­vited. DailySun reports an unknown person impreg­nated the woman, in her mid 20s and whose name could not be ascertained as at press time, late last year. Sources said that in the wee hours of Saturday, she gave birth to two girls without any as­sistance on top of a heap of garbage close to an AGIP filling station at Alaoji, along the Ikot Ekpene Road, near Aba.

FG Advices Nigerian Students in Eastern Ukraine to Vacate



The Nigerian Ministry of Foreign Affairs has implored Nigerian students in eastern Ukraine to vacate the area due to fierce violence and unrest in the region.  Ambassador Abdulaziz Dankano, Under-Secretary in charge of Economy and Consular in the ministry, gave the advice in an interview with newsmen on Sunday in Abuja.

Nigerian Doctor Who Attended To Liberian Man is infected with Ebola Virus In Lagos




Minister of Health, Professor Onyebuchi Chukwu, has just confirmed that one of the doctors who attended to Patrick Sawyer, the Liberian, who recently died of Ebola in Nigeria, is now sick with the disease.
Chukwu said two other people placed under quarantine were showing signs of the disease, although it is too early to say if their symptoms relates to Ebola. Sawyer was Nigeria’s first case of Ebola death two weeks ago, and since his demise there have been widespread fears  that some of the more than 70 people he had contact with also develop the virus.

IMPEACHMENT: Gov. Almakura Is Too Soft For My Liking – Kwankwaso





Kano State governor, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, has blamed the Nasarawa governor, Umaru Muktar Almakura political policies, saying it is responsible for the governors predicament.


Kwankwaso said: “you cannot be a gentleman and hope to survive as governor under the present dispensation”.
He added, “A gentleman cannot be a good governor, you need to have so many faces because the game is rough and can’t accommodate a gentleman”.

The Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, has said only collective efforts of Nigerians can rescue the country from its many woes.  The governor said this on Friday at a grassroots empowerment programme organised by council chairmen in the state, under the aegis of Conference 57.
He said the failure of Nigeria to achieve socio-economic and political growth, after over a decade of self-governance, should give a cause for concern.

2015: Don’t campaign for me yet, says Tambuwal



The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mr. Aminu Tambuwal, said on Sunday that it was against the law of the land for anybody to start campaigning for elective positions in the 2015 poll when the Independent National Electoral Commission had yet to give politicians the nod to do so.
