Fuel-laden tanker tumbles, blocks Abuja-Keffi highway




Traffic is at a standstill along the Keffi-Abuja Road, resulting in a gridlock, after a loaded fuel truck crashed on the highway on Saturday morning.  Eyewitnesses say the policemen, officials of Federal Road Safety Corps and National Emergency Management Agency are at the scene, rescuing survivors and trying to manage the traffic logjam. The casualty figure could not be ascertained as of the time of filing this report.

Business tycoon murdered in Kenya



A prominent Kenyan businessman was shot dead in Kenya's port city of Mombasa late Friday, police and eyewitnesses said. The murder of transport magnate Shahid Bhat, which occurred along a road near Mombasa's airport, comes amid mounting insecurity in the coastal region.

"The gunmen shot at him as he was driving along the road, and as they escaped they shot at another pick-up vehicle, wounding a child," Mombasa county police commander Robert Kitur said to AFP.

Military confirms trial of soldiers that revolted in Borno state



The military has confirmed the trial of soldiers who allegedly opened fire at an automobile carrying the former Commanding Officer of the 7 Division of the Nigerian Army, Major General Ahmadu Mohammed in May 2014.(Read here)

A spokesman for the military, Colonel Nwanchukwu Onyema, who spoke at the joint briefing of the National Information Centre did not give details of the charges against the soldiers on trial, he told journalists that details of their offences would be made public after investigations are completed. Reps ask CBN to stop trading in naira



The House of Representatives on Thursday blamed the growing trading in new naira notes on members of staff of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
In a resolution in Abuja, the House alleged that there was a cartel made up of bank workers, who exchange the new naira notes for gratifications and later resell them to members of the public.

The lawmakers accused the cartel of ensuring that new notes were not in circulation, a factor that explained the mutilated notes in the economy.
The House directed the CBN to stop the “bribe for new naira notes” by investigating the cartel and punishing the members of staff involved.

Bored gang of Boys Beat 8 Year Old To Death.




A gang of 11 boys aged between 9 and 13 have allegedly beaten to death their eight-year-old classmate because they were bored, Chinese police said today (Friday). 

The boys allegedly attacked Zhang Tai in the road just near the town of Zhangjiakou in north-west China's Hebei province. They reportedly beat him up, before leaving his battered and bruised body lying next to the road.

A Stolen 2-Year Old Baby Found At Lagos Airport 5 Days Later





A two-year old baby girl stolen by unidentified men from her parents' home in Lagos last week Friday after a vigil has been found at the local wing of the Murtala Mohammed Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

The little girl, Mercy Osunbawo, was in captivity for five days before she was found at the airport at about 2: 00 a.m. on Wednesday unaccompanied before she was rescued and handed over to the airport police. It was not certain how Mercy got to the airport.

Stalemate in confab over derivation formula •Kutigi meets 50 wise men today



AGAIN, proceedings at the national conference, on Thursday, were in disarray over the logjam between the northern and southern delegates, over the contentious issues of derivation formula and five per cent special intervention fund for the North East.


The development forced the chairman of the conference, Justice Idris Kutigi, to adjourn the sitting abruptly, in order to avert a free-for-all.  The plenary was thrown into chaos when the deputy chairman of the conference, Professor Bolaji Akinyemi, called on the members of the Consensus Group to present their report and recommendation to the conference.

$49.8bn oil money not missing —Senate •Rejects bid to remove fuel subsidy



SENATORS, on Thursday, ratified the report of its committee on Finance, which probed allegations of missing $49.8 billion oil revenue made by former governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Mallam Lamido Sanusi.


Lawmakers at the sitting ratified the report, which indicated that the allegation by the former CBN governor was unfounded, indicating that the said money was not missing from government’s coffers.
They also unanimously rejected the proposal that the Federal Government should remove petroleum subsidy, due to the alleged widespread misapplication of the funds.

WIFE of Ekiti State governor, Chief Bisi Fayemi, has alleged that “events unfolding after the June 21 governorship election in the state suggest that the election was manipulated from source.”
Mrs Fayemi said in a statement made available to newsmen in Ado Ekiti, the state capital, on Thursday, that “in due course, the full story of how the elections were manipulated against the governor, Dr Kayode Fayemi, would be revealed.”


She was said to have bared her mind while delivering a keynote address at the 50th Anniversary Public Lecture and Award ceremony of the state chapter of the International Federation of Women Lawyers (FIDA).

Nigerians have described the death of the Lagos-based human rights activist, Bamidele Aturu, as shocking and ill-timed.  They added that the deceased died at a time when he was needed the most. Aturu, 49, died on Wednesday.  Governor Ibikunle Amosun of Ogun State, the Minister of State for Works, Prince Dayo Adeyeye, a legal icon, Prof. Itse Sagay, and popular Yoruba actor, Mr. Babatunde Omidina alias Baba Suwe, described his death as shocking and devastating.

Nigeria Gets Amputee Ban



According to Pius Asaba, a member of the Amputee Football Federation for Africa (AFFA), the World Amputee Football Federation (WAFF) has suspended Nigeria from participating in its activities.
Asaba told the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, on Thursday in Lagos that the Nigeria Amputee Football Federation (NAFF) was suspended because the country did not pay its annual affiliation fee since 2013.
He said that the sanction had denied the country’s national amputee football team from participating in the 2014 Amputee Football World Cup, scheduled to hold in Mexico from November 30 to December 10.
“We have been sanctioned by the world body, and the implication is that our national team will no longer be allowed participation in the World Cup, organised by WAFF.
