Nigeria needs Saudi Arabia ‘to stop Boko Haram’

The best way to end the Boko Haram insurgency is to involve clerics from Saudi Arabia, a lawyer who runs a school for orphans of the militants has said. Mr. Zanna Bukar Mustapha, who owns a Maiduguri-based foundation, The Future Prowess, told Sunday Trust that leaders of Boko Haram belong to the Salafi movement with headquarters in the Islamic holy land. He is sceptical about the involvement of the US and other Western powers in the attempt to end the insurgency which has claimed over 10,000 lives in five years, drawing global attention with the kidnap of over 200 schoolgirls from Chibok nearly three months ago.

Why US bullies Nigeria, but not China and Saudi Arabia - Must Read

The Igbo have a saying – popularised by the acclaimed novelist, Chinua Achebe – that he who brings home ant-infested faggots should not complain if he is visited by lizards. That proverb is apt in describing the type of treatment Nigeria receives from the Western world, led by the United States of America.

Last year, President Barack Obama made his second “ward round” to Africa. Again, he excluded Nigeria from his “patients’ list.” The official excuse was that Nigeria’s democracy was not commendable. Also, since President Goodluck Jonathan signed the anti-gay bill into law early this year, the Western world, led by the US, has not allowed us to drink water and drop the cup, as the saying goes. Presidential visits have been allegedly cancelled; threats of cancellation of aids have been issued; patronising and condescending comments have been directed at us.

‘Saudi Arabia not conducive for FG, Boko Haram talks’

Dr. Frederick Fasehun

Founder and President, Oodua People’s Congress, Dr. Frederick Fasehun, says Saudi Arabia is not  a conducive venue for any dialogue between the Federal Government and the insurgent group, Boko Haram.
Fasehun said any dialogue between the government and the sect should hold within Nigeria.
The OPC leader made this known at a press conference in Lagos on Friday.

Fasehun said, “Saudi Arabia as host for talks on a purely Nigerian affair is fraught with danger.
“Therefore, Mecca will not be the ideal place for the negotiation of the security of a secular state like Nigeria and the OPC urges the government to change the venue.”
