Edo State passes ₦159.3bn 2015 budget

The Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, on Tuesday signed the 2015 budget estimate of N159.3bn into law.

The governor had on September 23, 2014 presented to the state house of assembly a budget proposal of N156.551bn for consideration.

Consequently, the lawmakers passed the appropriation bill, shoring it up by N3bn.

Speaking after appending his signature, Governor Oshiomhole expressed confidence that the state government would do everything possible to ensure that the “laudable objectives” contained in the budget were realised.

He described the signing of the budget to law as an indication that “Edo State is working and the various forms of government are functioning optimally.”

Oshiomhole assured the assembly that his administration would sustain its tradition of frugality in the management and costing of projects to ensure that the people of the state get value for their money.

“We will sustain the tradition of blocking leakages in governance as well as aggressively pursue revenue drive so that we can find the resources to deliver on the promise of this project.

“It is also my hope that the efforts which the federal government has been making is currently making, with regards to improving security around oil installations will lead to a substantial reduction, if not putting an end to the incident of crude oil theft.

“Once we can attain that, we then hope that all the revenue accruing to the federation from the oil and gas sector will become available for distribution at the federation account. If that happens, then, of course, our hope of getting this budget properly implemented in full would be realised. I have no doubt that this will happen.

The governor, however, condemned the use of some private electronic media to create factions in the state house of assembly, urging the management of the such media to apply professionalism and legitimacy in the reportage of events in the state.

While commending the lawmakers for maintaining the cooperation between the executive and the legislature in the state, Oshimhole stated that the absence of some of their colleagues “cannot possibly invalidate the proceedings of the house, particularly when the house forms a very generous quorum.”

“These electronic media that choose to report the activities of some individuals as if we have two parliament in Edo State, for me, it remains laughable. And the fact that we have signed into law the bill passed by the house of assembly, in my view, I hope we settle this.”

“I want appeal to those who own electronic media not to put them to wrong use. You can’t refer to parliament in terms of factions.

“Edo people know that they have a parliament. They know the parliament that was inaugurated by the Governor, in accordance with the provisions of the constitution. So, anyone who seeks to misuse the electronic media, whether for political calculations cannot in any way defeat the truth,” he said.
