The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, in Sokoto State has adopted new measure to monitor the border between the state and Niger Republic.
According to the corps Commandant in Sokoto, Alhaji Aliyu Yemal, the security agency has deployed security men in plain-clothes to the border to prevent arms importation into the country.
While speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria, NAN, in Sokoto on Saturday, 31 May, 2014, the commandant said they are working with other security agencies to check arms importation and ensure those engaged in such acts were arrested.
Yemal said they are working with local government chairmen and community leaders that share border with neighbouring Niger Republic in that regard.
“At the moment, we have deployed plain-clothes operatives to Illela, Sabon-Birni, Isa, Gudu and Tangaza local government areas of the state to arrest those who engage in arms smuggling.The commandant however, urged people of Sokoto, especially those in rural areas, to cooperate with the officers in efforts to prevent illegal importation of arms for the good of the country.
“Some officers have also embarked on foot patrols around the borders,” he added.
Recently, some members of Boko Haram insurgents were caught with arms and ammunition coming into the country through borders with neighbouring countries.
Cameroonian authorities stated some days ago that they have deployed 1,000 troops near a border between the country and Nigeria to prevent arms importation across the border and terror attacks.
