The Katsina State Government has introduced the payment of monthly allowances of between N3,000 and N10,000 to some 1,820 imams in the state. Governor Ibrahim Shema stated this on Friday in Katsina while handing out the allowances to some of the beneficiaries.
Shema also said that the state had so far constructed 500 mosques and rehabilitated a number of others in the 34 local government areas of the state.
He said that the gesture was part of the administration’s commitment to providing enabling environment for worshipping of the Almighty God.
He urged the imams to continue to pray for the leaders and for the peace and stability in the state and the nation at large.
Shema said that the government spent one billion Naira on pilgrims’ accommodation and feeding in the holy land during hajj, and gave an annual donation of 300 Saudi Riyals to each pilgrim.
He further said that government supports 100 Qur’anic schools where pupils are fed and trained on various trades to stop them from street begging and make them self-reliant.
He said that the government spends N500 million annually on scholarships allowances to 700 students of the state origin studying abroad.
