Spanish lawmakers on Tuesday overwhelmingly rejected a request by the northeastern region to Catalonia for permission to hold a referendum on independence in November, AFP reports. After a seven-hour debate, 299 members of parliament voted against the petition and only 47 in favour, with one abstention.
