EU, Kiev have no idea how to deal with protests in Eastern Ukraine - scholar

Kyrill Koktysh, an associate professor of Moscow State Institute of International relations with Russia’s Foreign Ministry, in his interview with VoR said that the ‘authorities’ in Kiev have no resources or authority necessary to deal with the protests in Eastern Ukraine. Moreover, neither they nor the EU have any idea on how to deal with this crisis, which became a global problem.

How does everything look? Everybody seems to be standing on tender hooks at the moment.
The main problem between Eastern regions and Kiev is the lack of ability of authorities of Kiev to get the situation under the control because Kiev government has no resources, no money resources, no authority, no moral authority and it can’t rely on the power because the loyalty of the paramilitary forces is questionable. So, the matter is whether they would be able to pressure eastern regions to stay within Ukraine, what the message would be, whether they would be able at all to produce such a message because up till now it is questionable because identity of the Western Ukraine that was promoted as it was set as a main identity as a result of the Maidan revolution, was not something that Eastern regions of Ukraine would like to have. So, the matter is whether their dialogue is possible and which fronts of this dialogue would pay, whether it would be only brutal fronts or whether it would be just more regular negotiations.
Do you believe that it is really becoming a worldwide problem?
Yes, it started as an internal Ukrainian problem that was on the regional level but now it is at the global level. As western headache regards, the main problem is that the protestors in the Eastern Ukraine are picking up the same slogans that were in Kiev one month ago and the same slogans that West strongly supported. So, what happened now? Because if West denies the part of Eastern Ukraine for freedom, for self-identity, whatever else, it will mechanically start the problems of devaluation of its own values because what would the value of liberty be worth for a European? How could you explain it? What is this? Because it can’t be applied to one part of the nation but not to the another part of the nation. And the most headache is that Kiev authority has no possibility to get economic message because the primary motives of the Eastern protests are more economic motives because they are afraid of their mines to be closed, they are afraid of losing jobs. Actually European Union has no message how to deal with this problem, and Kiev government has no message how to deal with this. That means that this problem would last not for a week, not for two, but it seems to me it is a long problem.
This is not just the question of simply pulling people out from the street.
Of course not, this is going to be a very long process and I think when everybody went into this problem, they didn’t realize it, it wasn’t thought out.
