Ukraine's Yanukovych 'called up' for military service: Army to intervene in conflict

Armed Forces of Ukraine finally reacted to the latest events in the country. Not using guns or tanks. Still, it is not the timid neutrality which Defense Minister Pavel Lebedev demonstrated a week ago after Kiev had been captured. He then stated that the armed forces would not intervene in the conflict, but will remain faithful to the Constitution. Now they recalled that the Constitution still has its guarantor.

Though the military service in the Ukraine is on a contract basis from this year on, Viktor Yanukovych was still called up. He was called upon "to take urgent measures to stabilize the situation in the country and to achieve concord in the society." As follows from the text published on the Ministry of Defense website, the military are concerned by forcible seizure of state institutions that prevents the authorities from performing their duties. They believe that further escalation of this process threatens the territorial integrity.

Therefore they remind Viktor Yanukovych that he also the Supreme Commander, among all other things. It certainly does not mean that Yanukovych is pushed to give the consequent orders. This sounds more like confirmation of their oath of allegiance to the president. As some people already have serious concerns about it.

Rumors are spread that the army is as much heterogeneous in its flanks as the two-faced Ukraine itself. This means that, for example, the western units of the Ukrainian army can disobey their commanders. Perhaps the first statement about their neutrality was made by the Minister exactly out of such fear. It would have been over the top for the Ukrainian authorities to add mutiny to the existing political conflict. The country is simply unable to fight on two internal fronts. It is possible that during this week, that changed the disposition of the Ministry of Defence, the mood of the regular units had been closely monitored, and some preventive work could have been to adjust it.
In any case, if the army calls up for someone, that means they need him. It is naive to think that Pavel Lebedev, who was appointed by the president himself, would take any action without his consent or even hint at it. Still, a hint is all that is needed in the light of recent events. And it is not because Viktor Yanukovych has to keep the country in fear. It is already so frightened by the rumors about the martial law, that nobody will be surprised if the tanks finally appear on the streets. Thanks to the opposition. The way they are forcing military apocalypse makes people feel like the army is already clearing the streets.

They are here; you simply cannot see them yet. Moreover, the rebels started doing this almost from the first day of the confrontation - even before the first Molotov cocktail was fired. On Friday, the Security Service of Ukraine told us why. A criminal case into the attempted coup was opened. Investigators have information that mass protests were planned well in advance before the summit in Vilnius and provided for the heavy-handed approach.

The information seized from servers of the All-Ukrainian Union "Fatherland" leaves no doubt that they planned to compel Yanukovych to use force against "peaceful" citizens, which equals to political suicide. In the end, he did not do that. Now he has to prove to the fellow Ukrainians that it was done not out of fear for the lack of military loyalty. So, the Army’s call is the prime evidence that it sided with the president. Or at least that it has nothing in common with the opposition. By the way, the use of regular troops is pennies from heaven for the opposition activists. They wholeheartedly wish to dive into the abyss of bloodshed. That is why they reject mutual concessions.
Using the momentary lull in the fighting, the radicals prepare for the heavy-handed approach. The so-called "National Guard" is created in Lviv. Euromaidan in Kiev is recruiting volunteers. In other words, they already have the "storm troopers". They also have their own Munich now. In a city where fascist movement appeared the international conference on security pays much more attention and solidarity to Yatsenyuk and Klitschko than to the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Ukraine, Kozhara. Apparently, the West is simply hiding behind the diplomatic facade, rejecting the "art of the possible." They do it solely to force Yanukovych to resort to the "Last Argument of Kings."
The Ukrainian authorities have really turned the other cheeks multiple times to prove a policy of non-resistance to evil. One can argue about the methods of settlement. They appear to be absolute for one group, while others find them insufficient and even fictitious. It is said, that every deed can be done in a right or wrong way. Or it can be done in the military way. The strategic advantage of Yanukovych is the fact that he tries not to resemble his foes. An army of lions led by sheep is doomed. The President of Ukraine still has a chance to prove that Napoleon was right. However, if you believe the emperor, then you have to act like a lion yourself.
