The new District Governor, Rotary International Club, District 9110, Mr. Olugbemiga Olowu, has said the club will focus on maternal and child health in 2013/2014 rotary year. He said the club would spend about N200m to drive this and other projects lined up by the club.
Olowu said this in an interview shortly after he was installed as the District Governor in Lagos on Saturday.
He said, “I am focussing on maternal and child health, water and sanitation, disease control and prevention.
“I have been working with partners and you can see today, I called up people of USAID and some medical personnel who are my partners. They are already on ground.
“It is going to cost about N200m to do what we have planned to do. But the goal is achievable because we have our partners; rotary foundation and Rotarians to contribute their quota to the projects.”

He added that the club would also provide adequate and safe drinking water to at least 25 public schools in the district.
He said the water projects would assist the schools to pipe water to their toilets and fish farms, among others.
Olowu also said the club would give microcredit to women and youths to start up small businesses.
Speaking on his installation, the district governor said, “I feel happy but then, I feel challenged because the work out there – to help the people and the community – is a big one. I am OK because I have been in the Rotary for 30 years.
“The position, humbly speaking, is a position of service. You are just a leader of the volunteers. You have to give all that you have to ensure other people work with you. That is the essence of being a Rotarian.”
In his remarks, first African President of Rotary International, Jonathan Majiyagbe, said Rotary believed in high ethical standards and improvement on the lives of the people.
He said over time, Rotary had taken part, through its programmes, in solving conflicts.
He said, “We have six universities in the world where we have peace fellows. When these peace fellows graduate from the universities, they can be employed as diplomats and conflict resolution personnel.”
