2013 Ramadan turned sour for the Adigun family of Abiola Central community, Moniya, Akinyele Local Government Area of Oyo State, as one of the youths in the family, Mutiu Tiamiyu, inflicted injury on the head of the family, Pa Nasiry Adigun, which led to his death on Tuesday night.
According to reports, Pa Adigun, who was visually impaired, was prevailed upon by his family members to observe Tarawhi prayer at home while other household members had gone to mosque.
However, the attention of neighbours and worshipers at the village mosque and its environs was drawn to the noise of a young boy who kept on shouting the suspect’s name around the village. Before people got to the scene of the incident, Pa Adigun was already on the ground, bleeding profusely.

However, the attention of neighbours and worshipers at the village mosque and its environs was drawn to the noise of a young boy who kept on shouting the suspect’s name around the village. Before people got to the scene of the incident, Pa Adigun was already on the ground, bleeding profusely.
The victim, who had lost his jaw in the process, was quickly rushed to a nearby private hospital, from where he was referred to the University College Hospital (UCH), Ibadan. He, however, gave up the ghost on the way.
According to eyewitnesses, Tiamiyu even ate his victim’s dinner before attacking him in his living room.
Speaking with the Nigerian Tribune, a member of the family, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said, “Baba (Pa Adigun) was at home while we all went to the mosque for Tarawhi prayer, because he was just recovering from his sight problem. All of a sudden, we heard one of the boys shouting Mutiu’s name, but because of the prayer, people shouted the boy down. He, however, consistently raised the alarm. Then, we decided to listen to him and followed him into Pa Adigun’s room. When we got there, he was soaked in his blood.
“It was while we were going to Pa Adigun’s house that the young boy informed us that he saw Tiamiyu clobber the old man’s head with two long clubs.”
The boy, whose house was beside the victim’s, had refused to go to mosque with his parents, and was loitering around when he peeped through the window and saw Tiamiyu attack the old man, he said.
The suspect, however, escaped after the attack, but was arrested at about 7.20 a.m. on Wednesday as he came home to pick his dog. Tiamiyu was arrested by the victim’s family members and handed over to the police at the divisional headquarters, Moniya, Ibadan.
Nigerian Tribune, however, gathered from some residents that Tiamiyu had been a thorn in the flesh of the family and neighbours. Investigation revealed that some of the residents had complained that Tiamiyu had been in possession of dangerous weapons, terrorising the community over a period.
When contacted, the Police Public Relations Officer, DSP Olabisi Okuwobi-Ilobanafor, confirmed the incident, saying the suspect who earlier ran away was arrested on Wednesday.
She said the suspect claimed that the victim owed his father some amount of money, but disclosed that some people in the locality claimed that the suspect was an Indian hemp addict. -
