Anambra, Cross River, Jigawa, Kano, Osun and Yobe are the benefitting states.
The European Union, EU, has contributed 94 million Euros (about N184.24 billion) for the implementation of the 10th European Development Fund (EDF) to support water supply and sanitation programmes in Nigeria.
A statement in Abuja on Thursday said the head of the National Planning Commission, Shamsuddeen Usman, said this while signing a financial agreement with the beneficiary states and local governments in Abuja.
The statement, signed by the Head of the Information Unit of the Commission, Salisu Haiba, said that six beneficiary states and local governments also contributed 26 million Euros (N536m).
He named the states as Anambra, Cross River, Jigawa, Kano, Osun and Yobe.
It said that the Water Supply and Sanitation Sector Reform Programme (WSSSRP) was conceived to contribute to poverty reduction and sustainable development.
It further stated that the achievement of the water and sanitation-related MDGs goals one, four and seven, would be done through improved governance in the Water and Sanitation Sectors.
“The WSSSRP II aims at consolidating the achievements of the predecessor project, WSSRP 1, with a view to addressing the remaining, fundamental weakness of the Nigerian water and sanitation,” the minister said.
It stated that the duration of the programme was 84 months, 60 of which were for implementation and 24 would constitute the closing period.
It stated that the MOU would commit both the National Authorising Office (NAO) and the six state governments to the reform of water and sanitation sectors in Nigeria.
The statement said Governor Liyel Imoke, who spoke on behalf of the focal states, pledged their commitment to the implementation of the project.
He said that for them, partnering with EU had brought about successful result for their citizens.
