Governors of the South-East geo-political zone spent N28m to celebrate the 80th birthday of former Vice President, Chief Alex Ekwueme.
Former Senate President and Chairman of Ndigbo Organising Committee, the group that organised the birthday for Ekwueme, Senator Ken Nnamani, made this disclosure.
The birthday celebration included a grand cultural festival, in honour of the politician at the Michael Okpara Square in Enugu, on Saturday.
Nnamani said the South-East governors used the occasion to consolidate Igbo unity, saying, “If we must make progress, we must be in unity.”
The former Senate president also acknowledged Ekwueme’s consistent involvement in politics.
“Ekwueme’s continuous involvement in politics is further strengthening Igbo unity. He is playing a more prominent role in politics now than when he was in government,” he said.
On the inclusion of a grand cultural fiesta in the birthday programme, Nnamani said, “It is aimed at celebrating our leader because in Igboland, we recognise our leaders.
“Alex Ekwueme deserves to be celebrated because of the role he played in the sustenance of the nation.”
Meanwhile, in a speech before the birthday anniversary, a former governor of Enugu State and alternate Chairman of the committee, Dr. Okwesilieze Nwodo, said something unique was about to happen in Enugu.
Nwodo said, “This is the first time the five South-East governors are coming together to sponsor this kind of project. It is high time people started giving honour to whom honour is due and that is why we must commend the governors under the chairmanship of Mr. Peter Obi of Anambra State because honour is not only for the dead but also for the living.”
