The story published in The PUNCH on Monday, October 8 on the explanation by the late sage, Chief Obafemi Awolowo, made an interesting reading. Prof. Chinua Achebe stated in his new book that Awo said that starvation was a legitimate weapon of war without any qualification or delineation of the circumstances or conditions under which it might be used. Second, it should have been obvious to all that the overriding principle that it serves humanity and justice far better to let a million criminals go free than deny one innocent person his/her right. In any case, what was the strength of the Biafran army compared with Nigeria? Does it mean that if the Igbos had found a way around the food blockade, the Nigerian government would have employed chemical and biological weapons for a quick end of the war?
