NANS commends Fashola for reversing LASU fee

The leadership of the South-West Zone of the National Association of Nigerian Students has commended the Lagos State Governor, Babatunde Fashola, for reverting the tuition of the Lagos State University to its original rate.

Fashola had increased the tuition from N25,000 to between N193,000 to N350,000, leading the students to go on mass protests.

It was reduced to between 34 to 60 per cent, but the students were dissatisfied before it was finally reduced to the original amount.

In a statement released on Monday, the Public Relations Officer of NANS South-West, Comrade Jeremiah Olatinwo, thanked the Lagos State Government for the reversal.

It read, “The leadership of NANS Zone D wishes to commend the Executive Governor of Lagos State and his team for their giant stride, largeheartedness and faithfulness to their promise by reverting to the old school fees structure of one of West Africa’s acclaimed citadel of learning, Lagos State University.”

Olatinwo added that this action would advance the frontiers of education and make education affordable to the common man.

He further saluted Barr. Femi Falana and those who stood by the students during the period of struggle for the fee reduction.

According to him, “Our profound gratitude goes out to our fathers and friends who in the spirit of comradeship stood strongly by us in the face of the struggle for the future of the students of LASU.

“To the students who despite the odds and pain, endured the fight, we say Viva Aluta.”

On the insinuation in some quarters that Fashola reversed the fees for political reasons, Olatinwo noted that he did not know of this.

He said he was grateful that the governor reversed the fees regardless of whether or not he had a political reason for doing so.

“People are entitled to their different opinions. He (Fashola) might have done it for political reasons, that I don’t know.

“One thing I am happy for is that we were victorious in our struggle for our colleagues in LASU. Political reason or not, he has done well to have listened to the plight of the people,” he said.
