Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) in collaboration with Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development has organized town hall meeting to enlighten all stakeholders in Ikorodu and its environs on ways to prevent incessant building collapse in the State.
The General Manager, LASBCA, Dr. (Mrs.) K.A. Animashaun-Odunayo in her speech at the occasion stated that the purpose of the programme was for the betterment of Lagos in particular and Nigeria at large.
Dr. Animashaun-Odunayo explained that the Agency was established in accordance with the Urban Regional Development and Planning Law 2010 to ensure that the universally acceptable standards are upheld both in the process of building construction and renovation, making new buildings safe, healthy, accessible and habitable for present and future generations.
According to the boss of LASBCA, “the responsibilities of the Agency, include building control in all its ramifications; giving approval to commence construction after obtaining Development Permit; Inspection and Certification of various stages of building construction; verification of General Contractors; All Risk and Building Insurance Policy; issuance of Certificate of Completion and fitness for Habitation; identification and removal of distressed and non-conforming buildings; public health control in buildings and fire safety requirements of buildings”.
She went further, during the question and answer session, to emphasise that it is 0f paramount importance her every prospective landlord to erect a project board which should contain all the vital information about the building under construction and patronizing only the registered professional at every stage of the project.
In his contribution, Managing Director, Lagos State Material Testing Laboratory, Mr. Shola K. Famaki, told the participants that they should always insist on seeing the building permit before embarking on the project, adding that the artisans should get registered and be law abiding in their practice.
Hon. Sheriff A. Anipole, Chairman, Ikorodu Local Government Area enjoined the people to desist from the habit of “cutting corners” by using substandard materials, adding that they could only utilize their hard earned income by giving their job to the most qualified hands because “the best is the cheapest”.
In the same vein, Chairman, Igbogbo/Baiyeku Local Council Development Area, Hon. Basanya Adegbenga urged the people to do everything in their power to adhere to the dos and don’ts of LASBCA in order to reduce the rate of building collapse in the State.
Some of the Management Team of the Agency, like Engineer Sholeye (Director, Inspectorate and Quality Control Dept,) Engineer Shola Adeigbe (Director, Post Construction Dept,) and Mr. Aremu Taiwo (Head of Building Admin and Public Enlightenment Dept,) in their short addresses unanimously stressed the need for the people to abide by the rules and regulations laid down by LASBCA.
Among the important personalities who attended the programme were Regent of Ipakodo, Chief A.K. Shitta, Chairman, Community Development Committee(CDC), Ikorodu L.G., Mr. Lukmon Shonibare, Chairman C.D.C., Ikorodu North, Mr. Laja Martins and representative of Iya Loja General, Chief (Mrs.) J.B. Fayewu.
